Apparently my wife and I like the cast and blasts so we got up at midnight and got down to the bay. Of course the teifecta of a good day on the water included dropping our crab pots, fishing, and having the dekes ready to go by lst. We got two out of three, so not bad. Ended up with a pot full of blue crab and some readhead to throw on the grill. The wind was NE so I thought we could try a new spot, but sand bars and uncharted territory for us at 2:30am made an easy decision to stick to what we know. So we headed to our normal spot for a north wind and found it pleasantly barron of other hunters as I am sure they headed to spots better suited for more of an east wind which is what the forecast called for. First bird decoyed a little after lst in my "J" spread and popped it on my third try. I didnt get a good shot so it took several follow up shots as it was swimming away to put it down. Then a boat went by behind us and kicked up a bunch of birds and I nailed a one shot drop on a fast and high pass at about 40 yards. My wife, all the while decided to put down the 12 guage and pull the trigger over 200 times this morning on her nikon d7200. We had another group of seven reds decoy and I waited as I wasnt sure if my wife would grab the boom stick and waited a second too long to draw as I watched thier tail feathers flicker as they dissapeared into the sunrise. Then I got lucky again with another long shot and dropped my third red head. I had an itchy trigger finger and the next two that came in I drew quickly on. They were sillouetted by the overcast sky and after dropping one I realized it was a coot. Its my first coot, so I figure what the heck ill marinade it really well and see if its as bad as everyone says.
As noon rolled around the wind hit out of nowhere and we scurried to get our gear picked up and loaded in the boat. We headed over to the crab traps and skillfully pulled them om the fly as if we were on an episode of the deadliest catch (ok maybe not that skillfully, but why not embellish a little?) No sooner did we get back to launch and the boat loaded did the wind really pick up and the rain hit. And now, as I type this thread my wife is looking at the radar of where we were and it is BAD...there are tornado signatures on the radar and we are happy campers to be home and letting the rain wash the boat.
Ive posted a few stories, and many of you have commented and given us our congrats. ...it was a great season and cant wait until next year! Next weekend is obviously the true end of the season, but stick a fork in us, because we are done!

I think he meant about you shooting your 3rd redhead. May want to reword that, unless you got a special redhead depredation permit

It must have been the sleep deprivation. My wife got the first redhead...collectively we got three.
Have any of you tried coot?
