So as so many of us reloaders do, I'm always looking to pinch a penny. In doing so I ordered a bunch of bulk brass from Amazon of random "Once fired" range brass. Out of three separate orders one is 4/5th Federal Cartridge (FC). I spent several hours over the past couple days prepping.(Including removing the military crimp lightly on my RCBS Case Prep machine and clean primer pocket). Now it has come time to load them I have crushed an estimated 7 out of 20 primers I started out to load. Immediately I stopped and started researching the ole www. I have found alot on the web relating to FC being too soft or thin and lots of guys suggest under loading them but not any about small primer pockets. Actually the common complaint is the opposite with many experiencing loose pockets with primers falling out. I use CCI No. 400 and load on a RCBS rock chucker. If any one has any ideas why and/or way to resolve cause I'm up to a couple thousand rds. Thanx in advance guys

You need to remove the crimp better. The FC brass is decent, but with a primer crimp, you have to remove ALL the crimp, or the primer will hang up on it when you go to seat a primer. What tool are you using on the case prep center? If it's the one that shaves the crimp, it takes a lot of shaving to get all the crimp removed.

I use the swagger on the Dillon 1050 for all my primer crimp removal. It works well on a progressive press. Buying 223 brass with a primer crimp can be a pain to remove if you are doing them by hand.

Use the hornady crimp remover screw in head attachment. I chuck it up in a drill press and whizz thru it. It has a stop and removes 100% of crimp. Cheap $10 tool that when used in a drill press hard to beat.

ChadTRG42 I am using the tool head on the RCBS Trim Mate Case Prep Center to knock off M. crimp but didn't bear down on it or spend what I thought would be excessive time shaving them down. I will go back through 50 or so of them again to compare. I was learry of taking off too much cause when I started reloading for the very first time a buddy had me use a drill press to take crimp off as you mention Jeorge and I hollowed out 100 pieces likedy split! Oops Ha the fun in trial n error and good friends with large supplies and small tempers.
Would it be benefitial to invest in a Swagger such as Dillion's and add one for step to insure when it comes to load my brass is ready?
I like to prep a couple thousand rds at a time and run "lots/batches" at a time to keep things organized.

^^ This is what I use also. If I run into one that is still tight when priming, I whip out the RCBS primer pocket uniformer in a small drill and give it a quick going over.

Removed what is thought would have been excessive amount of brass around primer pocket and now every piece of brass takes a primer with ease like butter on about half. Thanks for input gentleman

Here is an update to this. I reamed to large folgers coffee cans worth of 223 in 1:50hr. Im guessing 400+ cases with drill press and hornady pocket reamer.

I have been using the crimp remover off the Lyman hand tool screwed into my RCBS Case Prep Center. It works well but doesn't have the torque a drill press does.

I usually use a Dremel tool set at low rpm. Slight hijack: Case preparation on crimped primers and military cases like LC and PPU and PMC get old pretty quick, what with broken decapping pins plus time and fatigue reaming the crimps out. So, I see that MidwayUSA is running a closeout on General Dynanmics NEW/UNFIRED .223 brass.....$38.10 per 250 pieces. That would be about 15 cents a case, and you don't have to go through all the military case prep. I never heard of G-D cases, but the online reviews I saw were all positive. I just bought 1000 pieces, even though I have enough LC to last a couple lifetimes. Even if the G-D cases aren't good enough for Camp Perry, I bet they'll be fine for Camp Prairie Dog and Camp Coyote. ***My apologies to the OP....he was asking about .308 stuff. But enquiring minds might want to know about this .223 closeout***

I use these tools - ^^^ This one is screwed into my RCBS case Prep center and is the primary tool. ^^^ This one is for quick touchups. Same tool plus the handle. These tools work great and will not over cut the pocket.
Cast I have a short attention spa

I'm using same as Cast. Easy, fast and uniforms pocket lickity split. Whistle while you work! I thread in to an adapter and use benchtop drill press at low speed.
