I'm running 80gr Barnes TTSX but want to beef things up. I'm shooting a Remington 700 BDL Special Varmint made in 1974, 1:9 twist. The loads are for hunting only where I can take shots up to 350yds. I'd like to load 105gr but have been reading I need a faster twist to stabilize. True or False? Berger's website recommends 1:8 twist of faster for the 105gr VLD. Hornady's website says nothing regarding their 105 A-MAX. Anyone have first hand knowledge? I appreciate it.

Yes, the 1:9" is too slow for the 105's generally. I do know of a few 243 shooters that said they were making the 105's work in a 9" twist. But you will need to push it fast for any chance of success. I've had excellent results with the 87 grain VLD, and it shoots lights out. Knowing you have a 1:9" twist, I'd go 87 grain VLD, or the 95 grain Classic Hunter.

Also, if you look at the Berger Twist Rate Calculator, I try to keep my stability over the 1.4 mark. When it gets into the 1.2 area is when I see weird things start to happen and not work right. With cold temps, you a below the 1.2 mark.

I've shot some loads/bullets that were in the 1.3 and 1.4 area, and they shoot good. But BC will be reduced some. At 1.2 (or less right now with the cold temps) with a 105, I'm thinking you may have some trouble.

Thanks Chad, do you think the 87 grain will pack enough punch at 300 yds?

Only 105 I know that works in 1:9 is the Amax.

Is bc going to be that big of a factor with a max range of 350 yards?

I would def stay with the 100 grain group. Shooting 100 grain prohunters out of my 243 and they have been great so far.

I shoot 8.5 twist in my guns and shoot 105 hybrid...I wouldn't shoot a 105 in a 9. Like Chad said you can try it but you need to be close to pressure because speed is your main friend when trying to run a borderline twist/bullet.

The 87's will smack like a hammer...nothing wrong with them. The wind difference is what you'd notice the most between an 87 and 105.

I'm not too concerned about the wind. My stand location will either have it to my face or back. Main concern is having good energy in case I do shoot that far, most shots will be from 200-250 however 300-350 isn't out of the question at all.. I'll load both(87gr and 95gr) and see.. Thanks again for the advice, GREAT information!!

The 87 will have more than enough energy at those ranges.
