I inherited a Springfield 1903 30.06. It's a cool story i will save for later if it works out. I plan to try and shoot a doe this weekend with it. Shot it for the first time yesterday. The sticks in the gunshot holes are from another rifle. Shot it open sight at 100 yards and put 5 of 6 shots in the black. Needed to make sure I could hit something with it before I hunted.

Can't wait to hear the story. Love old rifles. Have you tried different brands of ammo?

This. I bet it's more accurate than you think

I bought some Remington Ammo that said Springfield 30.06 on the box. I thought maybe it was a round made for that gun.

It's like saying .270 Winchester or .40 Smith&wesson. Go look at the rest of the 30-06 ammo and you should find a wide choice of ammo

any 30.06 ammo should shoot fine, but different rifles prefer different brands/loads. I have my dad's old 30.06 Springfield and it really likes Federal Premium 165 grain BTSP but my son's 30.06 (700 BDL) doesn't. As stated, try different brands & grain loads to find which your gun tends to shoot best groups.

Keep your shots 75 yards and in and aim center of the shoulder you will be fine.

I've been wanting to shoot a doe with my Mosin Nagant for the last 5 years, but I never get around to it.

Assuming those are 1 inch squares on the target, I wouldnt want to hunt with that rifle til I figured out how to make it shoot. A 2-3" group is OK for 100 yards and in on a whitetail, but I wouldn't hunt with a 5-6" rifle. JMO, I hope it works out for you coach.

Ad far as ammo goes, every 30-06 box of ammo is the same. The full name of the caliber is 30-06 Springfield.

Well, obviously not the same, but they will all fit in your 30-06. One of those types of ammo will tighten it right up. It should be MOA.

Any idea if those federals are carried at academy?

Yes academy has them. I shoot them out of my .308 with pretty good success. I would recommend buying a few different kinds of ammo and see what your gun likes the most. My 30-06 loves the hornady American whitetail. Every gun is going to like a different kind of ammo, so you just gotta shoot different kinds and you will find that something works best for your rifle

yes, Academy (at least in the Austin area) carry the Federal Premium 165 (I think they are called Sierra Game King BTSP).

My 7 mag win 70, loves the grey biz winchester. It's about the cheapest out there my other guns hate it! Try a bunch and see what it likes. Here is some advice I was given on here. Find what it likes them hi buy a case. You will be good to go.

Captain Luke, go bust one with that nagant. I have a few. One is a dead on shooter, one is decent and one well it's nice to look at. It's all over the place. I love those old guns.

Some old rifles don't handle boat tails well at all. You should check the crown "maybe even have it recrowned". Or stick to flat based bullets.

Sometimes Academy has them and sometimes they don't. They did the other day but a month ago I had to head to Bass Pro since they were out. I also picked up a box of the 165 Trophy Bonded to see how they work as well. Pricey but I only shoot a box in a year.
