this is a addendum to the article written about the 428lb boar shot in Mississippi, I have always wondered how much wild pigs really eat. After gutting a few and seeing there stomach packed with nothing but corn. I think where we are hunting in W. Texas it will be just a matter of time before we get one over 400lb. in the last 3 weekends , we have shot and weighed a 250lb/265lb/2 @160lb & one that was not weighed that was bigger than any of the others somewhere in the 350lb range ( it was 2 big to move). and I have a few that are on feeder cams that have to be 350 plus . so far the biggest documented pig around our hunting area( weighed w/ pics is a 375lb boar)

this is a 375lb boar

this is a 250lb boar

this is a 265lb boar

According to Bronson Strickland, Mississippi State University Deer Lab Associate Extension Professor, wild hogs don't eat a lot more than deer and other animals when you compare the percentage of food intake to their body weights.

"Typically, the way we think about it, deer, sheep and other non-pig animals is three to five percent," Strickland said. "Probably a good estimation for pigs is four to five percent."

In other words, a 100-pound doe will eat about three to five percent of her body weight daily, or three to five pounds of food a day. A 100-pound wild pig will consume about four to five pounds a day. In the case of Carman's 428-pound boar, those numbers can be staggering.

If Carman's boar ate five percent of his body weight daily, that would be 21.4 pounds of resources. Over a period of thirty days, that would be 642 pounds of wild groceries. Over a period of one year, that number climbs to 7,811 pounds of food resources consumed by a single hog. To put that volume of food into perspective, it is roughly the equivalent 156 50-pound bags of corn, or about five pickup bed loads.

For that reason, hunters are encouraged to neutralize wild pigs, especially sows, whenever possible.

"Think about acorns," Strickland said. "Think about the mast that will be consumed.

"These are things that won't go to squirrels, wood ducks, turkeys and deer. This is all going into a pigs belly."

A old timer and good friend once told me that pigs never stop growing. As long as they can keep living and eating, they just keep growing bigger.

The largest pig on record is a Poland-China hog named Big Bill, who tipped the scales at 2,552 pounds - put down just before the Chicago's World Fair for exhibition in 1933

This weekend I watched piglets stay at my feeder eating corn for an hour plus. I kept telling my wife that I was shocked at how much a 10-20 pound pig can eat.

This is in the papers just about 1 year ago & not too far from our hunting lease

Hunters Blaine Garcia and Wyatt Walton caught a 790-pound boar on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, on a ranch in De Leon, a town about 35 minutes west of Stephenville. The hog was bagged after what could be a catch of a lifetime for Blaine Garcia and Wyatt Walton.
