Alright guys need ideas on how to control water level on my pond. The pond is about 3 acres average but swells to 4 when full. The 4th acre is shallow water no more than 24 inches or so. Right now it is over 100 percent. I am thinking about installing a drain to keep the pond at 3 acres in non summer months but then closing the drain and letting it fill up in the winter so my food plot will be flooded. Any ideas would be helpful. I am currently thinking about putting in a culvert in the current spill way. How would I put a cap on it. Also thinking about putting a 90 with a piece of 8 inch pipe coming up to allow the pond to drain that way.

Help is helpful. Thanks guys. Oh and doing this on the cheap too.

Do you have any pipe or culverts right now?

If you went with PVC pipe something like this would be cheap to plug up the pipe. http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/plumbi...lug-17-psi-40ft

Culvert with aluminum control blocks. They are the easiest to keep the beavers out of... if you have beavers in the area it needs to be your top priority when building this... iv seen a lot of simple ones put in that ended up costing the people years of fighting only to end up loosing the dam or rebuilding the spill

You can actually use them to fill your water hole back up again if you have a good creek or whatnot next to it. Not to sure of the laws in detail but I believe it has to be set were it will only siphon once the water level is above normal... pretty much the creek comes up and starts pushing water back into the drain.. you take a few blocks out then once it pushes over the blocks it starts a siphon process.. when you get to the level you want you put all your blocks back in... I got to use one for a few year vs the other three ponds all relied on runoff... was pretty sweet

The spill way is natural right now. It flows out the other end of the damn. The pond fills up through drainage from country roads. So only rainfall fills it up. I do have a pond that I can pump out of if it need helps.
