I am planting a food plot this year for the first time. I have been doing a bunch of research on different types of crops to plant and have decided that I am going to try soybeans. Where my food plot is, I have access to water so that is not a problem. This is a crop that is planted in the spring and gives deer forage throughout the winter as long as the plants make good amounts of seed pods. I was wondering if any of y'all have ever tried soybeans as a food plot and what your success has been?

I planted soybeans mixed with lab lab the last 2 yrs in a total of 10 acres. I planted in April and they lasted until early August. Deer wiped them out. Unless you are planted one acre for every 3 deer that will use the plot, you will not see any make beans. I am looking at planting Sunn Hemp this year, I decided against it last year with all the rain I had. It produces a lot of forage in a short time but has to be kept short. It is pretty drought tolerant also with really high tonnage and protein values.

I do have a very low number of deer on the property that I hunt but the genetics seem to be pretty good. I am wanting to get the most potential out of my deer by planting something high in protein. I think they are going to wipe them out because my food plot isn't very big, but I really want to see if it works. If it does work and I start seeing more deer in my area I will look at expanding the size of the plot.

the only way to keep them off the plots for growth is high fence the plot. Then when crop is grown you lower panels in the HF. I use to take a wire ring and place it in the plot where the deer could not get to that little area. It showed you how the crop would have grown had the deer not had access to it.

The plot HF is an expense of course but they will mow it down the minute it pops up otherwise

tlk and stxranchman: What variety of soybeans have y'all planted? There are quite a few to choose from. I was thinking about going with a forage soybean instead of a crop soybean. Just wondering if y'all had advise on what has worked for y'all.

We've had the best luck with cowpeas.....deer loved it when they first came up, but our problem is water and then grass-hoppers. Not doing another spring plot, will wait to fall. We are in Mills county.

We planted a 45 acre field in parker county with beans for 3 years in a row. You could definitely tell the difference in antler growth. When you would drive down there at night, it looked like a huge herd of elk making a mass exodus when they would take off. It was crazy how many deer it would draw in. I'm talking 100 deer on a 45 acre field at a time. And as stxranchman said, you won't have any beans in the winter unless you plant a 1000 acres of them. They will get eaten all the way to the ground.

Couple hundred acres. If they haven't turned by deer season don't bother hunting your feeder.

I have planted Hutchinson Soybeans the past 3 yrs now. I have planted Round-Up Ready varieties in the past also. They also sell a Laredo Forage Soybean variety down here for South Texas.
I have used electric fencing to keep deer off of foodplots with great success over the past 20 yrs now. I have used a 3 strand-2 fence type and then a single fence with 5 strands. Both worked well. I have not had to use it yet here on my place since I am able to plant 10 acres and am in a 32" average rainfall area. So far they stay ahead of the deer if I get timely rains.

Thanks for all the input and advice. Cant wait to get started on it. Will be lots of fun to play with and help occupy my time until bow season starts.
