Apparently I have been under a rock. I have looked at a couple of 300 RUM's lately and they can be had at a good price. So I did some research and really like the ballistics. So I really started to get serious about it.

One major problem I cannot find Factory ammo or brass. ANYWHERE!!!!! Everything is sold out and not available. Every major distributor and even the internet holes has nothing. Some back order available.

I know there are other caliber options but why is this round not available?

I don't know, but I found some ammo on gunbroker.com. I think it is a great round if you have the need for that much power, and the fact that it has not one but two different managed recoil loads turns it into 3 calibers in 1.

I did see "a few" on gunbroker and 1 person had brass but I am not very savvy on that website. I would think with as much ammo is available for other calibers I don't understand why the RUM is so limited. I have plans for Nilgai, eland and elk this year and really dig this caliber.

Drop down to a .300 Win Mag and your brass problems are over without really giving up anything important. Less velocity, Ok, the .300 Win Mag doesn't push bullets "slow".

It's fairly popular with the long range guys, and what's getting to be popular is the 338 Edge, which requires 300 RUM brass to load for. There's other wildcats based off of it, as well, so that's a lot of people competing for the same brass.

This. 300 WM will do it all with less powder.

I have a 300 RUM and like it. Not a rifle to go plinking with due to barrel life but a great hunting gun.
I am using Nosler brass. It is expensive but very good and how much do you really need ?
Just order the brass and it will show up eventually.
Or buy loaded ammo for brass (ouch $$) .

I understand the benefit of the WinMag and thought about it but

To late

Bullets are easy, have powder and primers. I will find brass somewhere. I handload and have 40 pieces of brass. Just didn't know it would be so hard to find more.

Since you got the rifle already, I'd buy that stuff off of gunbroker. There's not much to it, you just create a userid and password and click on "bid" or "buy now" and the seller will communicate to you via email.

I appreciate the info. Had I know the brass debacle probably would have leaned win mag. Probably be looking you up in the near future. I dipped my toes in the long range game and got a RPR in 6.5 creedmoor for some attempts at long range as well as setting this sucker up.

10-4 guy in Texas has 2 boxes loaded as well as 5 boxes of once fired I think I am going to bid on. Might need to buy stock in Retumbo.

Hard to see in pic but yes it has a brake.

Retumbo is available I picked up 4lbs today. Standard retail but I was there and it was available. Brass just seems to be the issue and I didn't know why.

I have enough to get started and I guess I will just back order some more or watch gunbroker.

Very excited.

Now the hard part. 180 or 200 grain projectile.

I've switched from 200 to 180 in my .300 WM. If you want them, I've got some Barnes TSXs I'll sell you for a good price.

I've run across a brass availability problem before, on two other cartridges. The story I get is that it is made in batches. It is hard to find because they are making something else, just now. In this situation, it will be hardest to find not long before it appears again.

Keep checking every once in a while... When it shows up, buy what you need for a year or so.

Right now I'm waiting for the next run of one of my favorite powders that currently is almost unobtainium. When it starts appearing on the market, I'll be ready to pounce and in the mean-time, there are enough occasional windfall finds to get me by.

That is a great-looking rifle.

Kind regards, charlesb

I can let you know. Looking at 180, 190, 200, 210 and 220.

I like the TTSX, LRX from Barnes and the Accubond. I have loaded the TTSX and Accubond in 180 grain in 300 WSM with great success.

This will be my big game gun and fun gun so I am not afraid to load the larger grain bullets.
