I have a Rem 700 5R Milspec 24" barrel 1 in 11.25 twist. Used as "my" long range paper toy now. I used to hunt with it and just slung Hornady factory 165SST's with it to great hunting success. I now have been hand loading for about 6 months and acquired via trade on here a better long range scope to reach out past hunting ranges. Looking at 600-800. May have some chances to make a fool of myself at 1000 but nonetheless want to develop a good load for this rifle. Have researched the internet to death and wanted some feedback from you waaay more experienced loaders than me.
I have a ton of Varget so I'd like to stick to that as to not have to buy anything else if possible. Have found varying load data from different sources. Pretty sure its gonna like 175 SMKs. Hodgdon says 42-45 grains for 175.
I use 44.4 Varget in a Rem 700 AAC-SD in 20 inch barrel with 165 Scirrocos to less than an inch at 200. I have the ability to get the exact measurements to the lands and such.
All that chatter for truly the question of is the 42-45 range for this bullet gonna get me where I need to be. Wanting to load up a test ladder and go make this happen. (not today with a 20MPH NW wind blowing here...Im not that good). Anyway any input/advice/opinions would be most welcome before I get to work at the bench. thanks in advance

Thanks for that. I was gonna try to start at 43.8 and go up .2 to 44.8. Lest I get a better plan....

I've had success with 42.5 and 43.6 in 2 different rifles with 175 bergers. You'll want the load with lowest es/sd for shooting to extended ranges.

You might try the full powder range your initial test. Initially i started from 43.5 - 45 and couldnt find anything my gun liked with 175smks. Went back and tested 42 - 43.5 and found the sweet spot at 42.4 for my gun.

Seat a 175 SMK or 178 A-Max even with the lands, load it between 43.5 and 45.0 gr. of Varget and it will shoot flies.
And the sun rises in the east.

You could just skip the ladder test and load three or four shot groups, of every charge, and shoot them at 300 yards. Tightest group/ lowest ES wins.

😎. Got lucky at FTW cabelas month and half or so and they had 8 lb for 205 all at the same time my buddy in Houston snagged me some before he knew I had bought that one. I feel like Captain Varget. Lol. Won't have to be looking for it for quite some time. They did have some at McBrides in Austin on Fri but they wanted 35 a pound. Plenty though
