Great for eradicating smaller critters outside of 22 LR range. Most are more accurate than a 22 win mag, so you can get a little more range than with with a 22 mag.
Up close they blow up small critters, so I don't like mine for squirrel or rabbit hunting. I mostly used mine to dispatch prairie dogs out to 175 yards. I could hit them further, but the wind is hell on that little round.
Within a relatively close distance, I think they do fine dispatching larger varmints, but I wouldn't want to shoot bigger varmints past a hundred yards. I don't want to wound critters, even varmints.

I've tested a variety of rounds from different manufactures and by far the most accurate round out of my 17hmr is the 17gr. hornady vmax. If there's any kind of wind accuracy goes to $hit. Largest animal I've taken with mine is a 100lb hog between 90-100yds. Have fun!

Just looking at that little bity round don't look it could do much, but I guess any piece of of lead doing 2550 fps can do some damage. I was trying so hard to find a coyote to shoot this evening, saw one fox but not a big fan of shooting them. Thanks for the input.

I was skeptical before I got one. Then I got one and took it out to my range for a day along with my .22WMR. I can't say exactly what it is, but the .17 is my new favorite rimfire cartridge.
I also like that I can find .17 HMR ammo MUCH easier around here than .22 mag ammo.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
