Hey, all. I just picked up a bunch of coated 125gr LRN bullets, and I'm looking for a powder suitable for loading these. My local Gibson's has 2400 in stock, and I've heard good things about it for midrange .357 loads.

Unfortunately, load data on 125gr projectiles seems sparse. I don't have any data for it, and I can't find a consistent load range online. Does anyone have any sources they could consult for me? Am I likely to experience flame cutting because of the light projectile?

Or if we can't come to a consensus on 2400, does anyone else have a suggestion for loads?

My old Lyman only lists a 121 gr. round nose. For 2400 is calls for 13.0 grs. on the low end up to 16.4 grs. Since you bullet is slightly heavier I would start a bit lower than 13.

2400 was always the classic powder for 158s in the .357 loaded to full power. I'm not sure about s "coated" LRN, but I think I'd be looking at W231, Unique, or something along those lines since you'll probably not want to push it full throttle.

Thanks. I'll give it a start at 12.5 and work up from there.

Unique was the powder I really wanted, but Gibson's doesn't have any, and I'm not planning on driving out of town any time soon. If I run across some I'll pick up a pound and work up some loads for it to compare to 2400.

Got a link for that bullet? I'd just like to see what it is...not familiar.

2400 doesn't like to be downloaded much and is not intended for "midrange" loads in .357. With such a light for caliber bullet, I'd go with something faster than 2400 like Unique or Bullseye (or Power Pistol or HS6 or HP38).

2400 is my favorite for .357 but it needs more lead and more powder than 125/12.5 IMO. If you want to use 2400, get some 158s or bigger.

Alliant recommends 17.5gr and I can assure you 12.5 won't be happy times.

I need to make a trip to Kerrville....2400 is impossible to find.

Pass the gravy.

I thought all the Gibson's stores were gone except the one in Weatherford.

Do not know if your local source has any Hodgdon Universal or Clays powders of not. In that bullet weight they work well and are very clean burning. Data available at the Hodgdon reloading data center for 125gr lead bullets.

What the guys are saying is correct. Powders need to operate at the pressures they are intended for, or you won't get a good, clean, and consistent burn.

Another point is that when shooting lead bullets, you need a good pressure peak to whump that bullet base good. That helps seal in the gases behind it, otherwise you'll have gas getting past the base and leaking past the bearing surface, and that will accelerate leading.

X2 I use it in .44 RM and it is really dirty till you up to max. I was surprised to see it list for real light .357 loads

This is Lyman 48th

Sorry I did not see you were shooting LRN. I will pull up another screen shot for LRN

edit: Lyman cast starts at 155gr and 170 gr so above screen shots are no good to you.

Yep....and those loads above are not light! They are for light bullets though.....and light bullets need to be flung a little harder. LFC cast, plinking, and 2400 don't mix.

For 125 jacketed (you can use jacketed info for cast in certain circumstances) my Hornady book starts at 13.9 and goes to 16.9. Still would be better off with a pistol powder.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll run by today and see if they've got any clays or unique.
