I'm not sure what she is or where she came from, she just showed up about a month ago and started hanging with my cattle.
She even comes in with them from the pasture with them when we feed.

Might eventually make a nice lead cow cool

Before you decide to shoot it you might want to look at the IUCN page. http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/11033/0 It is protected by the international CITIES treaty and requires special permits to harvest. You have to have so many on your place so that you are only harvesting a very small percentage. Or you have to have the capability to replace the ones you harvest from your herd. Can be significant state and federal fines if harvested without the proper permits.

We won't be eating her. She probably escaped from the exotic game ranch about 5 miles away. We've had Ibex show up before from there.
Thanks to everyone for the positive identification.

is there a law that you have to contact game ranch before you hunt? with out an ear tag, it would seem that it would be hard to prove ownership. since its non native, why couldn't you shoot? just asking.

hold on Newt, we got a runaway

That's very cool. When I was in South Africa, my PH and the outfitter both told me that red lechwe where escape artists and one of the harder animals to keep behind a fence. I told them that I would love to be able to shoot one, but didn't have enough saved up to pay for the trophy fee of $3,200. A few days later they asked if I wanted one for half price? The owner of the ranch who raises them had one escape and he wanted it taken before it left his land. That was a great day!!!!

Cast, she doesn't appear to be very old but I didn't even know WHAT she was much less how old she is until I posted here.

Not sure about the law but since she's running with my cows, I'd be very displeased if anyone decided to take a shot at her...

That's pretty neat. I imagine I'd leave her be. You never know, she just might attract the attention of a Lechwe bull down the road and you can start your own little herd.
