What angle would set my disc blades to make a food plot?. They are set inwards right now. That's for aggressive digging right? It will be heavy vegetation come next fall even after I mow. That's another question. How do I get rid of the thick clumps of grass after I mow to make it easier for the disk to penetrate the soil?
Thanks

To break up the clumps of grass in a field, they need to be mowed, then sprayed and left a couple of weeks to die, then plowed under with your disc. I go one direction then a second time a different direction then a third time in the original direction. and yes the more aggressive the better as long as your atv/tractor can pull it. You did not ask for this information, but you are going to need it when doing your plot. If no livestock, then I will start the arguments. In my opinion no question about the easiest to plant 100lbs oats/ 50lbs Austrian winter peas per acre. 100lbs of 13-13-13 fertilizer. Plant Sept 15 - October 1. Pray for rain. Put a feeder at the plot and you will have the best of both worlds. If you have livestock they will need to be fenced out or you are wasting your time and money. In the perfect world of food plots you get your wife to do it!!!!! 1. August 15. mow area to be planted. 2. August 15. spray area to be planted with a round-up type of weed killer. 3. August 25. plow dead plants under 4. September 15. plow field one more time. 5. September 15. fertilize and plant oats and peas 6. September 17. have it rain on your field and two weeks later everything is starting to come up. 7. October 1. still waiting for rain (in real life). bet don't worry, seeds will not go bad and will come up when it rains.

Spray the plot with Round Up or similar generic first. Then mow it after the vegetation is dead and plow it. Then if needed, keep plowing to work the dead vegetation back into the soil. I try to plow my fall food plots up in late spring and keep the land plowed/sprayed till I am ready to plant in the fall. Plowed ground holds moisture. Right now I have my summer plot areas plowed holding moisture. With all the rains I have some winter weeds in them now and will lightly disc them as soon as it dries up a bit. The deer are hitting those weeds also, so it is not a bad thing.

Thanks Don't touch that disc. You will end up spending a fortune at pervis bearing. Best thing todo is get you a good 16' fire break and back burn it. Then disc it.

Skip the Roundup. It has been moved to "Probable Carcinogen" at this point including links to causing prostate and breast cancer, as well as leukemia. There is not a compelling need for this application. Maybe there are times and places it is needed, but having fun making food plots for deer is not a must have situation. https://www.iarc.fr/en/media-centre/iarcnews/pdf/MonographVolume112.pdf

Everything causes cancer, use the Roundup. You're not going to poison yourself spraying out a couple acres, even a couple hundred. If it really caused cancer, there would be no old farmers. We spray before we mow, to give the spray more coverage area to adhere to. Tends to help on some of the more stubborn growth.

I use roundup on fence lines but not for food plots. I find that if I mow the grass as low as my shredder will go then it's not too hard to get it disked up. I go north/south, east/west, then diagonally. Having some moisture in the ground is really helpful.
In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years.

Ask 10 farmers how they prepare a field for planting get 14 different answers.
If you disc when the soil moisture is right it will be much easier and get the job done in fewer passes and leave a better finish. Of course a heavy disc is easier to work with and does a much better job with fewer passes than a light duty disc.
Mow / shred as low as you can, If possible I disc around the area then burn the interior. If burning isn't an option it'll take another pass or two with a disc.
I disc one direction then again across in a different direction. Next I attach a good heavy chain harrow (spike teeth down aggressive position) to the disc, then disc & chain harrow (both at once) the area one more time. You'll have to use something with enough weight traction & power to pull them together. Let it sit a few weeks then fertilize and run the chain harrow over it up side down / least aggressive position. Should have a fairly level no lumps or clods bare dirt seed bed when done.
A good heavy chain harrow is one piece of farm equipment I'll never be with out.

We spray before we mow, to give the spray more coverage area to adhere to. Tends to help on some of the more stubborn growth. That is incorrect. 118 agents have been identified to cause cancer, and 75 moved into the probable carcinogen category by IARC. Using that logic, there are old farmers, so they are never killed by farm equipment or die in car wrecks either? It is all about increasing the relative risk. Not everyone who smokes cigarettes develops cancer, but their risk is significantly increased compared to a non-smoker. Same with certain other exposures. From the National Cancer Institute: "What are some of the cancer trends among farmers? Farmers in many countries, including the United States, have lower overall death rates and cancer rates than the general population. Lower death rates among farmers for heart disease and cancers of the lung, esophagus, bladder, and colon, in particular, are thought to be due, at least in part, to lower smoking rates, as well as more physically active lifestyles and dietary factors. However, compared with the general population, the rates for certain diseases, including some types of cancer, appear to be higher among agricultural workers, which may be related to exposures that are common in their work environments. For example, farming communities have higher rates of leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and soft tissue sarcoma, as well as cancers of the skin, lip, stomach, brain, and prostate." ...... For example, a study from the AHS reported in 2009 that people who use the weed killer imazethapyr have increased risks of bladder cancer and colon cancer. Imazethapyr is in a class of chemicals known as aromatic amines. It was first used in the United States in 1989, and, since then, has been one of the most commonly used herbicides for killing weeds in soybean, dry bean, alfalfa, and other crop fields. http://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/ahs-fact-sheet

the main reason for this post was to find a solution in removing all the cut grass/vegetation clumps after I mow. I use 45hp tractor with a disk. Have the power, but the disk just doesnt do anything to the clumps of shredded grass/vegetation. I often find myself with a rake in my hand. Plenty of experience doing a controlled burn, but the area is surrounded by thick amazon type jungle. But I guess thats what Im going to do. If you hear about a forest fire in friday, Texas in October, that would be me. thanks for all suggestions.

Are you using a good heavy disc with scalloped / notched discs? ( at least 800lbs+) Does your disc have heavily cupped / beveled discs on it? Are you trying to disc in a small or tight area where you can't run the disc at optimum speed?
Cut grass / vegetation clods / clumps should be turned under & broken up if soil moisture is right, disc is heavy enough, speed you pull the disc is right for the conditions, too slow big clumps that don turn over, too dry or fast won't go deep enough skips across surface. Too wet balls up & sticks on disc, causes big clods.
A heavy spike tooth chain harrow with break up clods & rake off unwanted or matted vegetation. Turn it over & it will leave a finished seed bed.

You could always find water toats or old fuel tanks etc... to put on top of the disc.. fill it up with water when you need it and it will solve your problems
