I sent my Winchester 94 to the company to have it Duracoated, over the poor factory bluing, with outstanding results about 9 years ago.

This is my experience with duracoat

1. Clean exceptionally well
2. Spray on thin coats. Multiple thin coats are much better than 1 or 2 heavy coats. Heavy coats will chip.
3
Even though duracoat says it's not becessary, bake that finish in in the oven for 45 minutes or an hour at 170 degrees. This will make the finish flow out smooth and fully cure the duracoat. Ready to use as soon as it's cool to touch. Letting it air dry in most conditions it will not get hard for weeks or months. It will dry to the touch quickly, but not fully harden. Very few people live in those ideal temperasure and humidity conditions for air drying.

* couple rattle can tips
1. Shake vigorously for two minutes
2. Turn it upside down and spray to clear the nozzle before and after each use.
3. Put the can in a warm water bath to get optimum spraying ability from the can. Cold cans will spit and sputter.

I used to pay to have my barrels Cerakoted or Duracoated. JG convinced me to use regular spray paint on my last build. I used Rustoleum paint and primer in one. Looks perfect and it's durable. Less than 4 bucks.

HMMMMM, I used the rustoleum paint/primer in satin black and did my whole truck in it, looked awesome and 2 yrs later still holds up. I have the brush pinstripes and all and no chipping....never crossed my mind to do a gun with it. I have an old rifle I might try it on, if nothing else it can be blasted off....

Well I got my rifle duracoated yesterday along with all the parts. I must say this was very easy! I did actually sand the barrel down with 400 grit sand paper and cleaned with brake cleaner and the duracoat went on with ease! Not there is enough in the can to do 2 rifles with 4 coats each!

For sure, was going to go chassis color but went with my wife's choice of black. Guess she was right.

I'd do the bolt knob too I think. I like consistent colors.

Good article on the coating. Changing the subject on coating, 35 years ago an old man gave me a flash rusted Springfield single shot rifle. I took a fine emory cloth, sanded the thing down and applied several coats of Machinist Blue Spray over the rifle. Took it out the other day, and that thing is a Bright Deep Blue as it was when I first did it back in the 70's. I have shot the heck out of it and hauled it around up until the last 10 years. Amazing and cheap coating, durable as heck. I applied it over hot metal hung over a shop space heater in shop.

How does it hold up? I am looking at prices to cerakote a barreled action but I like the $4 price tag a whole lot more. I just need barrel and receiver to match in a flat black.

jeeper, stick with real baked on Ceracoat if you use your guns...I've seen too many Duracoat guns after a few years of shooting matches and, well......not too good buddy. BUT, the good news is, after watching the new TV show this year on the long range sniper matches. These guys $6,000+ rifles all look like hell but they have been put through hell at these matches.

Pretty rifles are for F-Class shooters, not snipers (real snipers)

Elk hunting has been hell on my Cerakote. I don't think there's any coating out there that can take abuse like that and not show it.
