Drew a "Gun either sex" permit for Potter County - Cross Bar Ranch hunt! Looks like a rugged walk in hunt, but figure I'm up for the challenge. Will be neat to see some new country. So... has anyone else ever hunted this ranch?? Or even heard of it?

It's actually BLM land that runs along the south bank of the Canadian River. I'm a little bit jealous as I applied for this hunt too, it should be a good time. I don't remember now, is it either species?

Whitetail only, which is what I expect to see along the river. Mulies are off limits.

Might also contact WTX A&M Biologist - they co-manage the area.

My daughter also got drawn for Youth - GDE hunt 11/27-29/15. I have searched online for information about this location, but didn't find much information at all. I know there are supposed to be some good deer along the Canadian River and this is the first year this area will be hunted in a long time. Can anyone forward any information related to this site. Noted in one article that they said access was difficult due to the property being land locked. Does anyone know if the problem has been resolved?

I talked to the biologist running the hunt. Only public access is via the River, and it's not a good option right now with the rain they've had this year. They are going to reach out to one of the neighbors to see if they can get temporary access for the hunts, but it's not likely to be granted. Will be a very tough youth hunt from what I understand. Miles of walking, rough terrain, and you have to pack out your kill. No vehicles or pack horses allowed.

Thanks for the info. I guess I need to call the biologist myself to see what status is as far as access. We would be coming from the Brenham Area. I would hate to drive all the way there and then not be able to get to the hunting area. I would guess that there would be some really good deer on the place though. What are your thoughts. Do you have the biologist contact info.?

I'm sure there will be a lot of communication prior to the hunt. And a lot of eyes on the weather forecast since a heavy rain or snowfall could create serious issues. PMing you his info.

I spoke with the BLM Manager yesterday and he said that he was working on getting access into Cross Bar through adjacent neighbors. He said you have to go through 9 tracts to get there. He is hoping to get this accomplished. I told him hopefully so at least for the youth hunt. There will be a specific sites picked out in each compartment for camping. However, there is no camping infrastructure,(no camping canopies or anything). He said he hopes to be able to escort us in and that we would at least have our truck at the campsite. This would be a much better alternative to having to hike all the way in. He said he hoped to email everyone in the next couple weeks with info.

Got the update on this hunt. Very bizarre access restrictions being applied. They'll escort you in on day one, then you must stay on the property until the end of day 3 when the hunt completes. Can't come and go, and can't leave early. I'm thinking I'll look at accessing via the river so I can come and go as I please.

Wow, sorry you missed Mr. Big, d, but like others said, you didn't leave empty handed on this truly unique hunt! Congrats!
