So with storage space running out, I found a upright freezer to store ammo in. I am wanting to store it in the garage and I realize I need a goldenrod to keep the inside warm but my question is, has anyone else done this and did you have success? I have a fair amount of match grade ammo so I don't want it to ruin in there. Was looking for input, advise, experiences, etc.

All I know is "they" say keep in a cool, dry, place. I feel your pain though.

I was given a large amount of ammo a few years back, so I asked three ammo manufacturers about storage conditions. In particular, I asked what the ideal temperature and humidity would be. The answer was always the standard "cool and dry."

I used to design and build dry rooms for a living, so the word "dry" has many meanings. Eventually, a customer service rep from Federal called me back with "72 degrees at 50% RH" - but I suspect that he was just getting rid of me.

My garage gets really hot all summer, so my ammo doesn't get stored there.

I keep shotgun shells in the garage year round thru hot summers and cold winters. Never have any issues. But i keep all my other ammo indoors. Mostly because i dont shoot it as much and cost a bunch more

Come to think of it, I leave my 12 ga AA's in my dove box in the garage all year , never had any trouble with them. I know people who leave a loaded .38 special in their glove box all year (very hoy and very cold) and shoot them, no problems.

I've reloaded in a portable building style shop for over 35 years,only a couple of them were insulated.Never once have I had problems storing ammo in any of them,and I have thousands of rounds of ammo setting in there year round. I keep it all in metal and plastic ammo cans that have seals on the lids.

My experience in Houston has been that moisture versus temperature is the element of concern. Stored in the safe or dry box with a sealed gasket lid in the garage is no issue, summer or winter. Stored on an open shelf in the garage during the rainy seasons (all year long) and then I have had problems.....

To the OP, maybe try sealing a box or two of ammo with a food saver and then open store in the garage as an experiment?!?

My mothers house is closer to my hunting areas than where I live so I keep a moderate supply of ammo there in a bedroom closet for easy access; I had them in a rubermaid plastic tote with the lid sealed with packing tape and desiccant packs inside .......

"That's good enough, and better than most peoples ammo storage." is what I thought as I left her house that day.

Some time later my mother put a box of dishes on top of the rubber tote the ammo was stored in; then placed a spare 1 gallon jug of Tide laundry detergent on the shelf above it..... The jug of detergent got a pin hole in the bottom some how and slowly leaked out, dripping down onto the rubber tote and seeped through the crack in the lid and what you see above is the aftermath.

Lost over 2,000rnds of .22 (when you absolutely couldn't find it) along with various boxes of shotgun shells, .270win, .257wby, .300wby

I don't know exactly whats in laundry detergent but it reacts BIG TIME with brass and the corrosion was MASSIVE, the bricks of .22 were fused together like a rice crispy treat and all the other ammo looked like it had been given a saltwater bath and left outside for years.

After that I went out and bought a load of brand new .50cal & .30cal metal ammo cans - Metal with rubber seal and locking lid, once again putting desiccant packs inside them...... And zero issues with ammo storage ever since, I actually think the ammo could survive being totally submerged in flood water in those ammo cans.

I picked up a 4 drawer locking file cabinet at a thrift store for $20 and keep all my rifle and pistol ammo in it, in the house. The cabinet is in my closet and it weighs a TON... I doubt it could be moved without unloading!

I've left shotgun shell in the garage also. Some were in ammo cans and some were just sitting there in the original box. No problems. The center fire ammo is in the climate controlled house.
