You have to use a 223 to kill deer. Everybody knows that.

.270 is based on the .30-03 cartridge

Just sayin'

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Here are some recoil figures:

.25-06/120 - 12.5

.270/130 - 16.5

.280/140 - 17.2

.30-06/150 - 17.6

.338-06/180 - 22.8

.35 Whelen/200 - 22.6

Obviously, the .338-06 A-Square is loaded heavier than the other, older calibers.

So was the .30-06, so I guess they all came from the '03, technically.

I had to look it all up. I had no idea. Thanks for learning me something new.

6.5-06 is a wildcat. I believe the .338-06 was adopted and made available as the .338-06 A-square.

Everyone of the cartridges listed was a wildcat at some point and time. They are all still based off either the 30-03 or 30-06 case.

X2 on the 6.5-06 banana
25-06 is real close to the 257 Weatherby (24" barrel) and is very mild shooter
also a 6-06, good one also.

Any of those cartridges would be plenty out to 200 yards. That's not much and they should all work fine. Pick one and if you're shooting within 200 yards I'd look for a heavy bullet for good energy transfer.

Pat answer, the one you can shoot the best! 30-06 hands down imo if you can handle the recoil and shoot it with confidence. Lots of reasons but won't get into all of that here, 270 would be my second choice. But of course my opinion as is others is worth exactly what you paid for it.

I would choose the 270 based on ammo and rifle availability.

Any of them will easily kill any deer that walks the planet. Pick one and go hunting.

By the way you left out the 7x57 Mauser and that is the cartridge the '06 is based on. The U.S. Govt basically took the Mauser round and necked it up to 30 Cal. It wasn't an original design.

I thought about this but then I simply don't care much for the 30-06 so from this list I'd go with 25-06 as the best Texas deer round of the ones listed but my personal favorite is the 6.5 Creedmoor followed by the 6.5 Swede.

Well, I hunted with a 270 for 25 years. It's a fantastic round, no doubt. Now I hunt with a 25 06 and it too, is a fantastic round. My wife shoots a 30 06 and it is a great round as well. Not sure that any one of them is better than the other. It's more a personal preference. This discussion could go on forever. 25 06 has a milder recoil and can reach out to some great distances, but then all the rounds mentioned can in most situations. I assume most shots on deer are within 300 yards. As turbotj said, it's the one you shoot best and feel most comfortable with.

I would bet that 99 out of 100 deer are shot at 200 yards or less.

I don't believe the .30-06 was based off the 7x57 but could be wrong.

Well, I was wrong in that the .30-06 has the same rim diameter and diameter in front of the rim as the 7x57 so the government probably copied it when they designed the .30-03. But it's longer than the 7x57, so you can't make a .30-06 from 7x57 brass and I think they are considered the basis for two different cartridge families.

Up to .30-06.

Lots of versatility to handload up or down...plus lots of varying factory loads.

I have used a .25-06 for many years. Have shot deer, pigs, and coyotes out to 350 yds. Use a 115gr Nosler partition. Very good rifle and round.

They did copy it. Remember the 30-06 was originally the 30-03, they added a little length to get the 30-06. The 30-03 was based on the Mauser cartridge and the Springfield bolt rifle was also based on the Mauser. As a matter of fact Springfield was forced by the courts to pay royalties to Mauser for a few years. Note the following:

Quote:
The Spanish-American War taught the U. S. War Department a valuable (albeit bloody) lesson about the merits of Mauser pattern bolt action rifles and the 7x57 cartridge. The result was the .30-03 Springfield cartridge, basically an enlarged version of the 7x57 that was used by Spanish troops to wreak havoc on American soldiers.

The .30-03 was introduced by the famous U.S. arsenal whose name it bears in 1903. (.30 caliber, 1903--get it?) But Germany was one jump ahead of the U.S. and in 1905 introduced the JS version of their 8x57 cartridge. This fired a 150 grain spitzer bullet at about 2800 fps and made the new American .30-03 obsolete overnight.

Not to be outdone, the Springfield arsenal shortened the neck of the .30-03 case 0.10" and loaded a 150 grain spitzer bullet at about 2700 fps. Thus was born the .30-06 Springfield.
