Bought a beater mossberg 835.
Cannot remove the choke and have no idea what choke it is.
Not worried about damaging the choke just want it out.

Ideas?

Worst case I'll just use as is but it would be nice to have options.

Or buy a new barrel but 835 barrels are a bit pricy and this gun is rough.

Soak the muzzle end in penetrating oil for a couple days (weeks) then give it a try.

Lots of topics in search if you look.

Acetone/ATF mixture will get it loose most likely.

Pass the gravy.

Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ................. 516 pounds .
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

50/50 mix

ATF alone works too, but the acetone thins it out so it penetrates well. The acetone evaporates quickly leaving the ATF behind

Dang, I'm a gunsmith in Abilene, I'd yank it out for you for free if you were closer. Try using a brass or aluminum punch and tapping on the choke tube from the end to jar it loose. If you are careful, you can get on the edge of one of the notches with the punch and tap on it to turn it out if it's not stuck/rusted too bad. Use a good penetrating oil and heat before tapping on it and they will almost always come out.

Maybe my situation wasn't as bad, but I had one stuck as well. I sprayed and soaked it over and over with WD40 and Remingtion oil and it eventually broke free.

If you're lucky and the wrench pattern is close to a Remington / Benelli, you can buy the 12 gauge Remington wrench that has the handle and a 3/8" socket hole at Academy (or anywhere else) and use it.

This worked with an old 870 barrel i had with a very stubborn choke. I soaked it for about 2 days and then put a ratchet on the choke tool. With a slow steady twist if finally came free.

KanoKroil or Liquid Wrench plus patience and it will break loose. May take a few days depending.

Heat does help but above should work.

Does the choke tube not have notches in the end to tell you which one it is? Or is it you really want the tube out?

hopefully, you'll get it out ok.
if/when you do, be sure to use
choke tube lube or antiseize
and re-apply regularly. it only
takes a tiny bit to keep it
from sticking
