My buddy wanted me to sight in his Remington 7mm Mag today. When I fired the first (and only) shot I had fragments spray back in my face. I've never had this happen with any firearm before. What would have caused this?

Could have been a hot load, old ammo, an obstruction in the bore, something wrong with the rifle, Hillary Clinton, etc.

My guess, blown primer or possible case failure. Or maybe just some gas leakage from a loose primer pocket?

Wow, close call there. Have you looked at the casing? Perhaps cracked case or blown primer? How did the bolt feel on opening? Did you verify the caliber is 7mm mag? Buddy supply the ammo? Quite a few variables to check. Pictures help.

Need more info. What does the case look like?

Like others have said, pictures of the case, including the head stamp, would be very helpful. Also, was it a bolt action or semi-auto?

Definitely need more info.

We know what the barrel chamber is supposed to be, but not the rifle manufacturer. Would like to see the stamping on the barrel and the head-stamp on the brass.

Is the wound you have from 'shrapnel' or were you 'flame cut'?

Did you check the cartridge you chambered? Could you have possibly fired a .270 (or any number of other cartridges) in a 7mm mag. chamber?

The case won't eject from the gun. I did make sure that it was the correct ammo. I'm going to take it to the gunsmith on the way home. Just crazy.

It had way too much pressure, most likely. The ammo could have been loaded wrong or the bore could have been obstructed or any number of things.

The important thing is that your injury was minor, and your eyes came out OK.

I have had the same thing happen, one time. My son was standing near and he said, "You look like you've seen a ghost!"

Boy was I glad that I was wearing shooting glasses!

Kind regards, charlesb

Used to work at a gun range and had a lot of guys get kind of crappy with me when I made them wear shooting glasses, or when they had to buy a pair in order to shoot because they left them at home. It was a rule and we had to kick them off if they didn't wear them (after warning them). You would think you wouldn't have to force a person to protect the only set of eyes they'll ever get.

I spent a year with one eye and an eyepatch. Got the use of the other eye back when they removed the tumor. During that year I was extremely protective of the one working eye. I was terrified at the thought of being blind. I wear safety glasses.

Dayum. That's a serious predicament.

Safety glasses are a MUST for shooting (if you're not already wearing vision correction that can offer protection). There are other times, too...once I was fiddling with a Remington 541 with the stock removed and made the wrong move of the safety. The detent plunger hit me in the eye and the injury persisted for a good ten years.

The point is, we all KNOW better than pulling boneheaded stunts like that...but we've all made the wrong move at one time or another.

That's the thing about something like shooting glasses. You drag them around for years and years, putting up with the minor inconvenience in large part because you have developed the habit of wearing them. - And then in just a millisecond one day, you find out just how important they really are.

Is there any chance of seeing the cartridge case? - When it happened to me, there were four holes around the circumference of the cartridge base, and with the bore-scope I later found places where the rear opening of the chamber had eroded near the edge, shooting out the molten steel.

Some rifle designs protect you better than others from this kind of problem. - I was shooting a military arm from the 1930's when it happened to me. My cheek and forehead was stung pretty good, but the glasses saved my eyes.

Close call and glad you are ok. I made a mistake years ago shooting an AR10 without glasses and got a very small sliver of brass in my eye. I thought it was just a scratch but after 3 days of it getting worse, I went to an eye doc and she had to remove it. I've always been safety conscious and not sure why I was not wearing my safety glasses (they were on the bench) but I did learn a harsh lesson.

I sure would like to see the case as that will tell the story
