I'm about to book a nilgai hunt and have been debating on trying a new bullet. I shoot a 300 win mag with 200 gr Accubonds and they shoot great but I was thinking about trying the nosler partition 220 gr bullet if I can get it shooting accurately. I also won't be shooting this round past 300 yards on nilgai.. What y'all's opinion on the heavier bullet granted they shoot accurately? Also dumb question but is a 220 gr bullet harder on the barrel?

Not harder, just takes more twist to stabilize. You've probably got that covered, though.

The Partitions and Accubonds act about the same. Both are deadly reliable on game. Those two are both heavy. I don't think it really matters. I would stick with the load you have, but a 220 grain Partition would be as good or better if you just feel like it.

A 200 gr Accubond is more than enough. It's already a premium bullet that your rifle likes. No reason to change.

Thanks guys. The main reason I was wanting to change is because I can't find the accubond in 200 gr. I just found a website that carries it so looks like accubond it is lol

If you have a load with the 200gr ABs they will do the job just fine. If you can't find them the partitions will work great as well. Either in 300 winny will do the job if you put it in the right place.

Since y'all have answered him I sure would like some help.

Will my 7x57 work for Nilgai? What bullet would be best if so?

It will work with a premium bullet like those mentioned above or a monometal bullet like the Barnes TSX. But it is marginal. Most would prefer a little bigger. Nilgai are big, tough animals.

RE the 7x57 Mauser...since Nilgi are very spooky and elusive..ie very hard to get close to at say under 200 yards, I'd offer the only reason a 7x57 would not be my 1st or even 2nd choice would be the slow MV in it's heaveist avaliable bullets.

"Karamojo" Bell killed more elephants that can weigh more than a pile of nilgi once upon a time, than are in all the zoo's in Texas with a 7x57 shooting 175 gr FMJ solids...but at a range reportedly always under 20 yards and closer to 5-10 yards was his preference during a charge. Bell's "sweet spot" was a thin very small gap in the skull that allowed the elephant's brain to be hit, but only from a close & upward angled shot placement.

While I haven't looked at any of the manuals or fired any of those bullets I'd suspect Bell's 7x57 bullet would not exceed 2400fps MV's...and have a substantial 200 yard drop...much less the longer ranges I keep hearing about that nilgi are killed at. FWIW there are a few nilgi killed every year by hunters using archery tackle...aka 7 Mauser ranges...so what do I know???

If you are dead set on using a 7mm of some sort, I'd think a 7STW - 28 Nosler would be a much better choice in mono metal 160-175 bullets and try and break some major bones to anchor the critter.

A lot of nilgai are shot on the run with the hunter in a top drive so that's why you hear the stories of them being shot at long ranges and taking multiple hits

If you are spot and stalking you can get much closer if you have cover available.

I sold a ranch in Falfurias that bordered the mariposa that was covered up in nilgai and I would always see them 60-80 yards away. They are wary and if you spook them they will haul a$$ but their not an impossible critter to kill

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

They are not that hard to hunt if you hunt. My three were all killed at 85-95 yds. I got busted multiple times before getting in range but its definitely doable.

For what it's worth I shot my Nilgai with a 300 mag using 180 grain nosler partion bullets. No problems at all. Your 200 acubonds will do just fine. Just remember that like most antelope the vital zone is a little different than the North American animals. I think that that is what gives them the reputation of being so tough to kill. There are several shot placement guides on the web. Just take a look at the shot placement guide and shoot accordingly.......you will have no problems.

Enjoy your hunt!!! They are a cool looking animals and they taste great.

I shot the 200 grain partitions out of my 300 wby for a few years. Shot a 225 lb hog in the head with it took him to the gut pile and propped him up against a rail road tie and shot through both shoulders and into the timber. The bullet made it 3/4's of the way through the timber and retained 60+% of its weight. I was impressed.
