He apparently got tired of all the noise and ruckus the youngsters were making.

This is typical during the pre-rut when most of the bucks don't have a doe locked down and isolated. This is also why we find several big bucks dead every year, never been shot, but look like they have... one of those 10" G2's punching into the vitals of the loser. Like this guy after the coyotes did their thing:

Here is a 3 minute fight I captured between a couple big boys:

That second one was pretty intense! So did the older one win? I am guessing that the older one was on the right at the beginning.

our ratio is close to 1:1. We have experimented as far as 2:1 (doe:buck) but it didn't seem to reduce the overall fights or collateral deaths due to fighting. In fact, we had more bucks die with a 2:1 ratio than a 1:1 ratio. I suspect it's because of two main factors: 1. The does that don't get bread the 1st rut, cycle again later, and the bucks fight again, for a 2nd time. and/or 2. The bucks tend to get run down a bit (nutrition) during the rut...with two ruts, it just makes their health a bit worse, for a longer period.

No science to my observations, just pure facts that I have witnessed. Is my experience unique or typical? I don't know....just what happened on our place.
