What is your opinion of the most desirable and sought out hunting counties/towns in the state?

I'm involved in Real Estate and have a passion for land, particularly hunting properties. I'm a huge hunter myself and I'm doing a little survey/research of other hunters in where they think the best hunting in the state is, and for what reasons? Not only just the best hunting, but best bang for your buck, lease or purchasing wise. Many of you have been involved on multiple leases or owned multiple properties in different areas of the state, but a lot of people may have only ever hunted in one area. If you've hunted in several different areas, what did you like most/least about your leases or you property, and why did you leave that area? Just kind of curious to be honest and I think it could be interesting to hear everyones opinion on the hunting all across the best state in the country.

Yep, sound'em all to south texas, or west texas.

I think for all around bang for your buck I'd have to go with Coleman County. I've hunted pretty much every where and that pops out most. Quality deer hunting, incredible dove hunting, good amount of turkey's and some quail and fairly good prices. I like the panhandle as well, just a lot harder hunting which I think scares a lot of people away.

I will start with desirable hunting, within 2 hours of the metroplex, ie. Wise, Jack, Young, Cooke, Bowie counties. Having said that, I wouldn't rate any of these as "best bang for buck" hunting areas. For that I'd rate Haskell, Kent or Fisher counties..Some very nice wildlife in those counties, usually at more reasonable pricing.

I'll throw Lampasas County out there. You can get a good 140" type deer as well as fill your tags. It can't stack up against south Texas, but it's a solid place if your in the right area.

With good management and like minded neighbors you can get good deer in any county in the state. Look at the TBGA site for current and past years deer. A good deer for me is good deer for that county or area of that county.

I say south texas. Followed by west tx. Irion, Northern reagan, sterling ect.

This. Collin too. Monster deer and almost impossible to find a place to hunt unless you have a lot of $$ or know someone.

I like the rolling plains. I've hunted in South Texas, Hill Country, West, Southwest, East Texas, Panhandle.

Personally, I like the large property areas that are remote and away from it all. I really want to be able to see alot of ground while I'm hunting. Keeps thing much more interesting for me.

This country sets up well for spot and stalk hunting, as well as Mule Deer and Whitetail which makes it even more fun.

Some areas have the genetics to produce big bucks with no help, and others need to be managed to produce big deer. I think the answer the OP is looking for is what counties have the reputation to produce big bucks.
Bexar county is one of those counties that had good genetics and a long standing reputation for big deer, and several book deer were killed every year in pockets all around Bexar County.
I know personally of, and have seen book deer taken over the years, but those pockets have virtually disappeared because of the growth of SA where the city limits (development) have extended past prime deer habitat up to and past the county lines.
That said, you might still poach a book deer out of Hillcountry Village if your brave enough.

Yeah its just like wine.... anyone can go buy an expensive bottle and do good but the true buyer can find one that's just as good as those expensive bottles and cost half as much.

But.... You were close Gray county period.

I hunted in those three counties for 20 years and always had a wonderful time. But I spent as much time traveling to and from there as I did hunting. So, I now get my bang for my bucks hunting in Eastland, and Bosque counties. Both a 2 hour or less drive from DFW, both 1/2 the least cost. However, the deer size of out west is not the same, but there are some nice ones out there. Here are 4 photos, two from last year, two from this year of bucks killed in Bosque and Eastland counties. Both from places 100 acres or less.

Me too. I hope they never allow rifle hunting. I like to rifle hunt at times as well and I have the entire rest of the state to do it. Also lots of small tracts of land so I can't see that bow only will ever change. I know the warden and biologist for Grayson would not want to see it change either.
