I've hunted San Saba, Mason, Menard, Brown, Brewster, Shackleford, Stephens, Webb, Dimmit, Lasalle, Frio, Lampasas, and Hood counties. My two favorites are Stephens and Brewster. Stephens is where I decided to buy my ranch many years ago and live. Brewster is beautiful country but too dang far from anything.

However, the deer size of out west is not the same, but there are some nice ones out there. Here are 4 photos, two from last year, two from this year of bucks killed in Bosque and Eastland counties. Both from places 100 acres or less.

In regard to size do you mean body weight? There are some bruisers in West texas that are taken every yr.

Those are some nice deer! up

Yes, I was not clear, what I meant to say is that the antler size is not as large close to the metroplex as what you can get out west on some of the large well managed ranches.

Like others have said, matter of opinion. I guess you could go off lease prices and say the higher end is the most sought after, but the higher end would not represent the majority of hunters. I guess you could say the most record book entries, but once again those are the high dollar lease counties and do not represent the majority. So I guess where I hang my hunting coat is the most sought after!

Those counties haven't been real hot for purchasing land in awhile.

Frio, northern zavala, southern medina and southern uvalde are hot now.

Live oak is hot east of 35 as is Bee county

Several reasons:

Lack of inventory, lack of owned minerals attached to the surface, distance from major metro areas, increase in oil and gas production

You don't have to go to Webb or maverick counties anymore to kill a big deer.

With modern management practices big deer are becoming commonplace in most counties.

With high fences and improved genetics you can grow a big deer in a parking lot

Got any high fenced parking lots for sale? I hate clearing brush.

A close friend of mine hunts on the Cage Ranch in Maverick County, about 30 minutes from Carrizo Springs. He killed a 173" earlier this year. Great hunting down there, just a trek for those of us in DFW.

Land prices in Haskell county and Stephens County seem fairly low for the great hunting I see consistently come out of those areas.

How about more of the panhandle? Childress & Hardeman are known to be great counties, but how about a little further north?
