I saw a great piece of bird work this morning by one of the red setters. You simply would have to have been there to grasp the full greatness. I had picked up Cracker to go around the gap. One of the setters was stopped near a bush on the other side of the fence about 200 yards from the gap. We raced the Ranger around the gap and back to the bush where the setter had stopped. He had come off it and we picked him up with a little trouble. The Garmin had beeped point on Yeats, the other setter, about 150 yards away. Yeats was like a statue. ET made a valiant effort to produce birds. Yeats never moved. ET released that great dog, which went another 100 yards and nailed the covey for a classic covey rise.

I'll take the non self relocating pointing in most situations. How about you?

Couldn't agree more. Love to see it and have been witness to it many times in my past. Dog's working are awesome.

Self relocating in a heart beat. You may as well quit hunting 95% of bird species if you expect birds to stay put

If the birds move I don't want my dog to stay on point, he can relocate on his own.
His job is to point birds, not where the birds were a minute before I got there.

I'm a purist. I only hunt bobwhite quail. I understand on other species, but you know what?

I judged NSTRA. I judged national champions. I competed against national champions. I had a regional champion. I've never seen a better find than the one today, except maybe on a skidding stop. Dogs can self relocate in NSTRA and still be scored on the find, but it runs the score down. Distractions run the score up. We had those. Long difficult flushes runs the score up. Yeats never moved a hair during the first flush attempt. You know what else? You know it when you see it.

much prefer the self relocating. But I am not a purist. I have seen way too many Nstra dogs come up way short on wild birds.

Ding Ding Ding! No doubt about it when you see it. Skidding stops and freezes are awesome also. Man you guys make me miss it bad.

Yep, self relocating for me to. By february, a dog that won't self relocate, is going to be left in the dust on most quail leases and they are useless on Blues.

If you're hunting pheasant, blues, etc. Having a self relocating dog is a huge help. If you don't have a self relocating dog on pheasant, it's a lot tougher for sure. If somebody is trialing their dogs, they definitely don't want a self relocater. But if you're just a wild bird man, it's fine.

My shorthair self relocates, I don't trial her so that's fine. I'll train my new Brittany pup not to probably since I plan on trialing him. When I had the pleasure of hunting with Tigger a few weeks ago, I was running a pretty nice male pointer that belonged to a buddy of mine. He locked up on a covey, and I relocated him twice (if I remember correctly) and the 3rd point produced a nice covey in front of him. He also slammed on a point on a single so hard that when his back legs whipped around he kicked up dust behind him. I've never been a huge fan of pointers but that dog is changing my mind about them in a hurry.

Quail have instincts also. Mother quail will lead the chicks away from danger or go the other way. Here's another thing that happened yesterday. Cracker is a self relocating pointer. We were working a covey and Cracker's Gramin beeped pointing at 250 yards. She was solid when we first saw her, but had relocated several time when we got there. We pushed up a couple of birds on the way, and there was only one quail when we flushed. We were denied the classic covey rise. Another thing is that the backing dogs are free to go when the pointing dog relocates. That can lead to a cluster.

Some of you read the log that I kept. It was mostly about Sis. I was looking for another pointer. I came up with Peaches. Here you go;

Sis and peaches would team up on a running covey. Sis would back out, make a wide loop and stop the birds while Peaches remained on point. It was an amazing thing to watch.

You need at least one pointer for some street cred, young man.

I have had ONE, used to hunt hedge rows in MO. & KS. once in a while I had to go by myself, if you have ever hunted rows you know what its like, if the birds moved down the hedge row, this dog would loop around & come back towards me. a setter that was the runt of the litter & so bad shy the breeder gave him to me, I never tried to do any training till he got completely over the shyness. he won the Verdigris field trial in Coffeeville Ks. in 1969 in a field of 205 dogs.

I hunt woodcock in the thick, thick stuff. If they run a little and Jenny doesn't self-relocate I'm toast.

But that's a whole different ballgame, as you point out.

I have to go with Cinchman on this one, I hunted with some guys who were working pups for a trainer and the most dependable bird finder was a 10 month old pointer female.

I saw Yeats work at a NSTRA trial as a young pup, and you could tell he was going to be a outstanding bird dog. Seeing a dog stay on point with intensity, and style, while someone kicks up brush in front of them is indeed a beautiful sight.
I'm not knocking a dog that's been trained to stay on point until released.
I just need mine to relocate if the birds start running, and do it without putting them in the air.

ET is in south Texas with his two dogs this week. The people on that particular lease generally hire a guide with dogs. This time ET and his dogs are doing it all. They are both getting solid finds on up to ten coveys an outing. The cool weather really helped down there.

People on that lease are not stupid. They generally pay over a thousand dollars for guides and dogs each trip. ET will get invited back.

ET just called from south Texas. There was another group of hunters this morning with a pro who had 10 bird dogs. He took out two hunters himself. He and his two hunters with his two dogs came in with more quail than the group with the pro.

Pretty good meat dogs.

Just goes to show, quality beats out quantity when comes to dogs.
