 Never turkey hunted before

I hear turkey all the time while out deer hunting. What would be the best way to go about hunting them? I can hear them from where I am at so should I try calling them to me or try to go find their roost?

If you have a feeder they should be coming to it, if not, then I would put out trail cams and try to find travel routes that they are using and set up and hunt based on that info. In the spring is another issue, set up a couple of decoys and call them in.

I do have feeders, but have never seen them at it. I will probably only be hunting them in the spring as I am small acreage and use my shots for deer only in the fall.

Next time filling the feeders, look around for turkey scat. If they're visiting regularly, it will be there. Tom scat is a round tube in the shape of the letter "J". Hen scat will be similar to a coiled rope. Looks for tracks, feathers and if they have been scratching. You'll see the scratch marks in the earth.
Starting late February and increasing in March, listen for gobbling at daylight (best) and/or late evening. Find the high ground and listen from there. If you can hear them, you should be able to focus in where they are roosting.
I warn you now..its a terribly addicting sport, but there's nothing like calling in a big tom strutting and spitting.

I will say this, when I started hunting turkey in the spring, it became an obsession! The day that spring turkey season ends I start marking the days off the calendar until the next season. Once you have your first tom respond to your call, whether you close the deal or not, you will be hooked. I don't see how a gobbler doesn't hear my heart beating because it is pounding so hard when one is working in. I only have one tom to my credit so far after to seasons but man what a rush. as soon as deer season ends, I starting scouting for the upcoming spring season I have so much fun and thank the lord that the season isn't 6 months long. My wife gets a little bent because she only see's me during the week until Friday morning and then again on Sunday night when I get back from TURKEY HUNTING!
Good luck in your quest but most of all have fun and enjoy. You will not regret taking up hunting in the spring season.

Since they are hitting your feeder you should be able to get to respond during the spring season. I have found that if you are not very near a roost, the hunting is better a little later in the morning after the tom's have split from the hens.

Just set up early on the route you think they take to the feeder.. calls wont get you very far this time of year but a few hen clucks and soft yelps can help.. they will have a normal path they take to food from roost. if you know were there are a good bunch of big oak or any larger trees near by set up on a hillside leading to feed.

in the afternoon or late morning you will want to do the same but set up on a in-between water and the roost

Few things really excite me anymore, but I took up spring turkey hunting and I became obsessed. I am going deer hunting this weekend but it is only because I turkey hunt in the same area and I will get a jump on scouting for spring turkey season. Shoot, I might actually kill one while deer hunting, I always take my shotgun just for that reason.

Can you tell from those pics if they are eastern or rio? From what I found online I am supposed to have too in my are but was told those look like eastern...I know I have a lot of research to do before next uear

Turkeys work our feeders over big time in the spring and summer but we rarely see one during deer season. This year did see a few poults near a feeder that is used sparingly. Turkey hunting is great and will get in your blood fast.
