I have been wanting to do this for a good long while. I am bad about cleaning up the wood chips in my shop. I built this little box and spliced it into the vacuum suction line. The far right side goes up to and hovers over my lathe to catch the dust and some chips. So when the door is closed the suction contines at the lathe. With the door open you can sweep the chips into the box and away they go into the left side suction line.

Very nice. I have seen this done with plexiglass for visibility purposes. Wasn't for a duck call lathe though. It was for cutting semi conductor wafers for solar panels in order to try and recover the silica. Same concept though.

Sorry... Solar panel companies use the same design when they are running their saws. That better? up

That's cool, Wayne! I need to do some upgrades to my DC system. I did buy some $6 plastic blast gates and wow what a difference having the suck all on one tool versus spread out.

You're going to get blistered for that last sentence but not by me roflmao

I was too cheap to buy blast gates. I just put a cut off piece of board across the other openings. I would really like to move that loud arse dust collector outside. I can't even hear the telephone ring as it is now. I just don't know how the top filter sock would do in the high humidity days. The good duck call making woods are very oily. If you look in the suction line over my lather, you can see the build up of cocobolo dust. The wood gets hot, the oil goes with the dust and it gets sticky. So I would be concerned about putting my dust collector on the porch. Concerned the humidity would aid in blocking up the filter sock.

No, but have done some consulting there as one of the people I lease land from is a retired scientist from Honeywell. I work in the petrochemical industry.

Gather silica capsules from new shoes, jackets, etc. and put inside filter canister. That is what the recovering device I spoke of was used for. These small granules are used to decrease humidity and can be sold to retailers for their products instead of being swept into the trash.

I have a tall attic in my shop... like I can stand in it with no fear of hitting the ceiling. Thought about moving the DC up there to cut noise but it gets awfully hot in the summer. Thinking instead of a three walled shed butt up against the back of my shop. I've never built anything like that but there will be no city code people involved and it doesn't need to be airtight, just good to go from rain. I like to listen to music while I carve, hard to do with that thing running.

Dave I am the same way. I could move it into the porch and just use old barnwood to fence it in so to speak. If you're worried about the attick getting hot enough to damage the motor, you could run that cheap aluminum vent hose from the doctor vent directly to the motor air intake on the back of the motor. I think that would cure the hot air problem. It might even exhaust your hot attick air at the same time. That should make the Austin hippies happy.
