What do you guys think or know about western limestone county, pretty much on the county line between falls and limestone...any of you hunt out there, etc...We might have a shot at a place and just from talking to a few people there are good deer around...

I'm in SW Limestone, about 8 or 10 miles or less from the Falls County line. We have plenty of deer, hogs, and coyotes. Antlers are pretty good, though not record book level, though the occasional super rack will get collected. Deer bodies aren't large, but neither are they the tiny ones I used to see north of Austin. This has been the least fun hunting season in a few years. Weather has been overly warm, and the deer aren't moving much, except in the pasture around the house, which is off-limits to hunting. I'll see nothing at a stand in the back, and walk back to the house and the wife will say she had 10 does and two fighting bucks in the yard.

We live here, and I'm happy that I can hunt when I want and as often as I want. Wish there was a doe season. Grandson got a really nice 8 point, which made me very happy. And there was a spectacular 8 and a good 10 that I have not seen since the season opened. I'll see them after the season closes, I'm sure.

Cover is pretty sparse in that part of the country. Really depends on the specific location. I've seen some decent bucks from out near prairie hill. Can you be a little more specific on the location?

We have plenty of cover on our place, which I think is necessary. Wouldn't have bought it otherwise.

I was on a lease near Kosse 3 seasons ago that had tracts in both counties. We saw very few deer and we went out a lot. The other guys said it was a fluke and i believe them for the most part, the next year they sent me pics of their harvest. I will say though the boss arrowed a pretty big 10 pointer. That and the AR made me look for a place that had more deer and was closer. There were quite a few hog sounders that moved thru the area and tons of coyotes. We even did some duck hunting on some of the larger stock tanks he had. And lots of rabbits, good small game.

It could have just been where we were, one place was mostly ranch land with more sparse cover. The other was a good mix but just didnt see squat. YMMV, good luck!

Inlaws have a place back closer to Marlin off 147. Large place but mostly open pasture. One strip of woods by a mostly year round creek bisected by an abandoned train track. I've fed corn there for two years and fed lots of birds and varmints.

Seen one deer in two years. Nice 8 point buck. I almost fainted and let him pass just for having the temerity to be there (and because it was dark). Zero pics of deer on game cams after 6 months of trying over two seasons.

I think if you're more towards Groesbeck or Kosse or have a lot of good cover it could be better and have heard of the isolated monster. But it was so sparse I gave up and went back to the hill country.

yes..we use to own 300 acres about 1.2 mile from where this buck came from..we would see deer there occasionally and some decent bucks but it was always at unexpected moments...this buck in the above picture should be number 5 in texas was once it dries,,,

Where off 147?

I've seriously spent many hours watching and many months with game cams out seeing nothing. Always heard the rare big buck story out there.

I think specific location (ie closer to Marlin vs Groesbeck) and maybe more so available cover yields huge differences in deer potential based on relatively small location differences.

Love to get thoughts from someone who knows this general area better than I do.

That's just a little ways east of us. But we are in mostly open farm land. Maybe that's the issue. Would love to figure out a way to make that a productive hunting spot but man it has been bleak.

No, generally no deer at all. Seen one deer in two years. Nice 8 pt buck. Never caught any on game cam.
