Been out of touch over the holiday. Had the pleasure to take my boy hunting a couple of times, just me and him then got to take a father son. Taking people can be somewhat of a drag sometimes, but when you see a 12 year old light up at day break when he realizes that he is on the "X", it's really something. Just a few pics of the past week.

This is my just turned 8 year old. This ole spoonbill was the highlight of my week! My boy was the only one running a call the whole time and this bigmouth chump turned right at him. One shot of 410 bismuth, and my boy was absolutely ecstatic! Did it all by himself and oh did I get to hear about it the rest of the morning...

Father son shoot. The 12 year old was asking his dad when they could come back before LST! Great feeling to see a young one that enthused in the outdoors. Makes all the work well worth it. Not to mention, this kid is on the #2 ranked baseball team in the entire country and his dad is best friends with Skip Johnson, hook' em horns...

Picking up birds for father son shoot. Never bring my dog while hunting out of layouts and with mixed company... Anyone else do the same? Just the thought of him accidently breaking and being eye level with a 12 gauge of stranger just worries the mess out of me!

Putting them in their lap...

When I hunt with people I don't know I stake my dog down and I can count the number of times he has broken while hunting in the last 3 years on 1 hand. Not worth the chance.

Agreed... No matter how well trained they are, just hard to take that chance. Had a friend of mine in Missouri, who guides, get his dog shot. Hard to even imagine that situation and how I would react....

I know the father/son duo. Total BS on both counts of #2 ranked team and being Skip's friend...

What's their name then? Or what team does the boy play for?

Maybe so. I don't have any reason to lie about that though. I know the guy cancelled a hunt prior to this so he could go deer hunting with Skip and his 13U Majors NTX Banditos baseball team was waxing every 14U Majors team in DFW this fall. You can look em up. I looked it up for the end of last season, and they were 3rd in Travel Ball. They told me 2nd now.

What's up with dogs bolting on hunts with strangers? I normally hunt alone, and my dog never bolts. Really. Creeps, but does not bolt. But one time I had a chance to show her off on a hoity toity lease, there were four of us shooting, and she bolted! We were in a blind behind a levy, and she ran up in front of us, so it was really dangerous. I figured it was the explosion of 12 shots as opposed to just my usual two or three. But maybe it was something else. Maybe dogs are like those little kids who behave reasonably well at home but are terrors when they get out in front of guests, because they know mamma isn't paying attention and won't whup them in public. Any thoughts?

Very true... Always at the worst time. I can be hunting with guys that have hunted around my dog for years and have loads of birds in our face in the woods. Dog never moves! Take a kid out that may not be as conscious about the dog, he's gone... Crazy, but it happens. I never leash him though. Like I said before, I have seen the leash hang up on tree limbs as well as the vest that a lot of dogs wear. Had to save my last dog twice due to the vest and the leash coming lose. Yeah, yeah, waiting on a comment on how to properly secure a leash.

If I gotta leash him, he'll just stay home.
