I have a Remington 700 in 270 and exploring option to turn it into 7mm mag. I know I need to rebarrel to 7mag through a Smith but what else is necessary, bolt face\new bolt? Anything else?

It would seem much simpler and cheaper to sell and re-buy. Is there a specific reason to perform a conversion?

Probably be much cheaper to sell or trade the 270 for a magnum rifle and then it's just a re-barrel plus any other bells and whistles you want.

Cheapest option you have with the .270 action is to keep the bolt, buy the 7mm barrel, and have the gunsmith chamber it for .280 or .280 A.I.

There is another option though, but dunno if it can be done with a 277 x 284 conversion. Theres a couple outfits on the west coast and one more in ummm ...Ohio I think that does barrel re boring. But it usually takes more than a .007 change in bore diameter though to clean up all the old rifleing, as I've been told.

Google Rifle Barrel reboring and see what you come up with. JES Reboring is who lots of folks use on 24HourCampfire, along with some others in Oregon, Idaho and California. Seems like I heard JES charging about $300 to do a cut rifling rebore to change calibers + some other options like custom twist rate & custom # of lands and grooves, rechambering & bolt face conversions from .473 to .532 for standard length magnums, cleaning up the lugs and bolt face yadda yadda.

Check out "Rifle Reboring by J E S"

Some day I'll look at doing one to take a 30'06 into a 338/06 or 9.3x62 in a rifle I intend to keep forever. Just an idea that's been done for years and years.

Fireman JG,
I've been looking at the 280AI. In a 26" barrel with 140-150 bullets will ballistics mirror 7mag? What about 6.5-06?

No way they can "mirror". The .280 has less case capacity, and therefore less muzzle velocity, than the 7 Rem Mag. However, it is awfully close to the 7 Rem Mag's MV, and you don't have a belt on the brass.

If someone gave me, or sold cheap a .270, I'd promptly turn it into a 280 A.I. load it with 168's and thoroughly enjoy it! Today I loaded ammo for a good friend. 7 Rem Mag with 168 gr. Bergers that leave at 3000 fps. If it were a .280 and making 2900 fps MV it would still be a badazz.

Look at the Nosler Accubond and Berger offerings in 7mm.

You edited while I was replying.

The 6.5-06 would also be a hotrod pushing 140's 2900 fps+ I suspect. But being the BC and bullet weight hound I am, I'd go 280 A.I. if it were mine.

On the 7mm ?

1:9"

If you felt like running a heavy 180 gr. it will do it. It can also run lighter bullets, fast, with some powder tuning. I suspect the 160-ish grain bullet will be the best performer, though.

6.5x284 Norma is a good alternative to wildcatting a 6.5-06.

The heavier 6.5 bullets are pretty long... The high sectional density there is part of why they have such a good reputation. With the 6.5x284 in a long action, you could seat them out as far as you decided to have the barrel throated for, and obtain better velocity than you might get from a 6.5-06.

Then there is the availability of factory brass - and even factory loads to consider. Lots of published loading data too.

As far as converting a 270 to 7mm mag goes, the advice about simply selling the 270 and buying a 7mm mag sounds most sensible to me.

I'm going to hijack this thread a little and ask some related questions I've had about a pipe dream rifle. I'm in a similar situation with a 30-06 I'm committed to keeping.

Assuming that one reloads so many more calibers are available, meaning cost of ammo is not the biggest concern:
1. What is the "best" long action cartridge?
2. Is there a noticeable performance difference between the 280 and 280ai?
3. I've always heard that long action calibers "need" a 24" barrel? True or untrue? If untrue, then what is about the min without sacrificing long range performance?

To me long is 600+.

1. Best for what?
2. More velocity, less case growth
3. I say true, as a general rule. Chad may have the answer to use a faster burning powder for a shorter barrel.

I left the criteria of best open ended intentionally. Just want to know what people's opinions were. While there is nothing wrong with 30-06 or my rifle, I thought it would be cool to have a more unique caliber.

I guess I don't u defeat do why the ai would generate more velocity, I assume u mean with the same powder, but does that mean the ai is more consistent than the regular?
