building a sbr. looking at 6.8 with a 11.5 in bison barrel. wondering if anyone knows what kind of distance you can get out the barrel mainly after 200 yards if possible.

200 yards is a cinch for a 6.8! I play around with the factory federal 90 grain xm 6.8, dead on at 100 with 1100 lbs energy, 5" low at 200 yards with 800 lbs of energy and 19" low at 300 with 600 lbs of energy remaining. The 120 sst factory hornady dead on at 100 yards 1350 lbs of energy, at 200 yards 5.5" low and 1100 lbs of energy, at 300 yards 19 inches of Drop and 950 lbs of energy. Psa had the federal xm 6.8 for 9.99 a box during thanksgiving.

Hey, I'm actually running a 12" 6.8 SBR!

Like huntandfish said, 200 yards is a cinch for a 6.8. With a decent scope, even hitting out to 500 (the max at my local range) isn't that hard. With my SBR pushing a 110gr BTHP at 2350fps, I had a 5.1 mil holdover at that range. It had something like 500 ft/lb energy, which isn't enough to take game with, but it's still enough to let you hear a nice "ping" when you hit steel.

Instead of trying to make my SBR a target gun, I finally came to my senses and put a 1-4x on there and couldn't be happier. The gun is light, handles like an SBR again, and I'm still comfortable hitting out to 300 yards for hunting.

What are you mainly wanting to use it for?

I bet that will make a nice handy combo.

I recommend closing the distance on the hogs if you can.

Ive killed numerous hogs using the 6.8 sbr but this was my first deer. Shot at 230 yards, as my pen feeder is 200 yards and buck stayed behind pen in brush but doe peaked his interest and gave me a shot. He ran 27yards and piled up, entrance hole had no blood but exit hole had plenty. Lavaca county, seclusion, tx. I run a leupold vx1 3-9 40 mm with the boone and crocket reticle(two dots). Sighted dead on at 100 yards, first dot is 200 yards with scope on 9 power, third dot is 275. All yardages verified at range of course. Buck started showing up week of thanksgiving but only after dark. This was his first time and last time showing up before dark.

I run a 12.5" AR Performance barrel on my SBR and it is suppressed with a Saker 762. I have taken notes out to 240 yards with in but as FiremanJG stated its a better idea to close the distance on hogs

The 6.8 is the #1 choice for hunting deer and hogs in an AR15

Have you ever tried a 11.5 in bison barrel?

I just bought the Bison 6.8 Upper with the 11.5" barrel. What buffer tube/assembly would yall recommend? I am putting a Magpul STR stock on it.
