After hunting from tree stands most of my 40+ years, I've taken a liking to hunting from a ground blind. This morning I heard what I suspect was a wild hog as it came up from behind me during the pre-dawn darkness. I could tell it was a large animal by the sounds it made walking through a small slough that was no more than 30 or so feet to my right. It was a little unnerving to say the least not being able to see the critter and thinking it might even get closer. I thought it best just to stay quiet and let it pass since it appeared to be headed towards my feeder that was set to go off in about 30 minutes or so.
Anyone ever had a similar experience? Did you react any differently and have a different result?
Whatever it was, it never showed up at the feeder, and never made a sound other than its steps as it walked through the slough.

This happened to me about a month ago. It was a bobcat at something under 10 yards. Then, a couple of hours later, a hog, also at about 10 yards. All in all, it was a pretty exciting way to night hunt.

Had a large boar rooting next to my pop up during archery season. Of course that window was closed so I could hide in the corner facing the feeder. Close enough the sand was hitting the side of the blind. I had a pistol at the ready but he finally wandered off without us meeting. I was a considering which window I would jump through had he decided to root under.

Stxranchman also makes a good point.

Squirells are 100 pounds when it is dark out. I remind myself that I am the most dangerous predator on the continent. Then make sure the 1911 is cocked and safetied

I'm not worried about them being too close. Just if I'm going to get to put them in an ice chest.

Getting licked behind the ear is Ok in some social situations, but only by wild women, not wild game.

Would haveta go with nak . On them cool, clear evenings way back in the hollers, ya can still hear the faint girlish far off shrills... Some say its a panther others a squash... Twas just me after runnen across one of them thar, sneaky snakes... Think that's were the rummors got started bout squash knockings.. twas me runnen threw de woods screamen & ing me noggen on ever low limb run inta cause didn't carry flash light... Some times i'd wake up from me nap in de wee hours of de morning... rumors of panthers & squash soon started, kinda like the crop circles got started back in 70's... Edit: nothen scaryer in the woods than a person scared of his own shadow... on that NV & Thermal, gives advantage ta hunters ta see what's moving... never did get an invite by the Elite

i've had animals just feet from me. the worst when out hunting was a skunk coming toward me on the trail. just barely enough light to see, and we didn't see each other until we were right on top of the other. i had to yield the road very slowly and it went on about it's way and did not spray me

I've had a bird land on my head, squirrel run across my legs, and spooked a deer (I think) before light on the way to my stand. The first sound of that animal taking flight was as loud in my mind as any gunshot has ever been. Soul-piercing.

I love it when the deer get close. I had a doe walk about 6 feet away from my popup blind last night. Too close to shoot with my rifle, and I decided against shooting her with my 10mm.

Between sundown and dark I was walking down the road to a stand for some night pig hunting. Rifle slung, NV folded up on to the helmet, with a sandwich in one hand and a Diet Coke in the other. There was an armadillo ahead, making a lot of a noise, just to one side of the trail. As I walked by the 'armadillo', the grass exploded right beside me as 7-8 piglets tore out squealing and moma shot out from the other side of the road.
The sandwich went flying and it is a wonder I did not shoot my foot off trying to get my pistol on the little sow. She was running away as I unloaded a mag, without a trace of blood to be found. After I calmed down, I noticed liquid running down my right pants leg...luckily it was just the diet Coke, which I had somehow stuffed in my pocket.
It would have made for great video.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

When I was 12 I fell asleep one morning leaned against a tree, I had wrapped 3 trees with camo netting and was sitting inside of it. A noise woke me up, when I opened my eyes I was in a staring contest with a doe at ~6ft. Took me a second to get my heart rate under 1000 bpm, once I shook the sleep off. She stood there for a min or two before grazing away.

Sitting in a stand at Mason Mountain several years back when an Schimitar Horned Ibex decided to feed my way. At 10 feet, those horns look pretty imposing. Found a stick and chunked it to get his attention away from me. I could hear his teeth clipping the grass as he fed, and had no idea what I would tell the rangers if he had decided to get up close and personal. Fortunately, he fed in a different direction after I threw the stick.
