Had a 3 day cow elk hunt scheduled 12-16 through 18 with two of my sons at the Vermejo Ranch in Raton,NM. Youngest son, Joey, scored first Wednesday morning using 308 and 168 NBT. One shot, 300 yd DRT. [list] [*] Thursday afternoon my oldest son, Teddy, and I got into a herd and the guide set us up in one spot which didn't give good shot opportunity, So moved a few yards and I was holding out so my son could shoot and get his elk, when a cow gave me a shot. Asked the guide if I had a shot should I take it. He said yes, Boom! Cow down DRT, 161 yd with 7-08 and 140 TTSX. My son said all he had to shoot at was the rear end and head and did not want those shots. Proud of him for that. [*] Friday our last day, went to the same spot where we got on the elk the previous afternoon and the elk were crossing the road heading back up the mountain. The guide told Teddy to jump out of the truck and pick a cow and shoot. At 75 yds and a off hand shot with 7RM and Federal premium 165 gr Sierra another elk was down. [*] Overall we had a good time and now with plenty meat in the freezer that will last a good year. The scenery was beautiful with previous snow still on the roads in places and on the sides of the hills. The toughest part was having to stop ever so often to catch our breath while stalking at 7-8000 ft elevation. Coming from Houston, Texas area at 250 ft to the mountains at 7-8000 ft that is a big change.

Congrats to all 3 of you, bi score in the meat department! Raton has some nice country to be in too, and a reasonable drive from TX.

Sweet! Now you have given me a goal. We pass through Raton every time we drive to visit my daughter in Grand Junction, CO. I'll have to investigate hunting there. I would LOVE to have elk in the freezer.
