What do you guys do with a pup this age. What do you expect from them. Dog is for wild quail. Any and all opinions welcome. Thanks!

Make sure it not soft to the gun and take it hunting. It should be pointing at six months old.

How does he react to loud noises? A trainer once suggested getting a cap gun and firing it behind your back while he's playing. Once he gets to ignoring the sound, gradually work him up to real gunfire, and he should be ready to hunt.

I would expect him to find some birds, or I wouldn't have poured 6 months worth of feed down him.

I just returned from a trip to Brooks and Duval counties where I took my English Setter pup that was born July 2 of this year. Now the bird counts were insane.....grown dogs pointed over 65 coveys in 2 days. I found the right opportunity for the little girl. Turned her out with a check cord with a grown dog. I lost her while paying attention to a scattered covey flushed in front of the older dog. Went back looking for the pup to find her pointed and holding. Walked to her and flushed a single. Did not shoot! Grabbed the check cord and took her to look for downed birds from the covey flush. She found two dead birds for us. I was one proud poppa! My grown dogs were fantastic but to see the puppy's performance was worth the price of the trip.

At 6 months I would expect him to flash point and bust and chase birds that he can are running away. And that ok. Keep quiet and let him learn from wild birds. No discipline what so ever

Birds in heavier cover that he can't see will give you better dog work but don't expect him to hold point like a veteran dog . Still expect him to chase birds in air in heavy cover also

I believe chasing birds builds there desire to hunt and find birds and that's what your trying to accomplish in a young pup is to bring out his natural breeding to learn to hunt and point. You can't teach this

I will shoot birds for him if you get any point out of him. This teaches him together your a team and this is what your after

I would plan on his first season being like this until the light comes on for him

He needs the gun introduce like Bill said and most importantly, he needs to be ran. There's a lot of stuff you can't teach the dog, not even a little, and he's geared to learn it. Stuff about which side of the cover to work depending on the wind, the fact he can't catch song birds, let him chase rabbits. There's a lot out there. Don't overdo him on pen birds, at this age it is FAR from worth it. And get him out hunting as soon as possible. It is saying you're in northeast Texas so you can get him in the woods at a local WMA and put him on Woodcock or if you have the time make the trip out west and put him on wild birds. I'm going this weekend and would enjoy having you come if you able. If not, I'd be interested in taking the dog. My number is 469-410-2683. Give me a call or texas. And if you don't have land, we have land out here you can use to let your dog run.

as above stated, he should have the instincts, every dog is different, the noise factor is #1 on my list, getting in the field is next, "NO RABBITS", with young dogs I always had ONE person with me to shoot, I worked with the young dog on a cc cord. we used planted birds. .

hold on Newt, we got a runaway

Chase rabbits? You have got to be kidding, right. That is the cardinal sin in my book.

My dad would pepper a young dogs butt for chasing rabbits. I remember one in particular that chased a rabbit and busted a huge covey of quail doing it. He got peppered good.

A lot of things can and have gone wrong with that.

It was common practice before electric collars and effective.

It wasn't common practice for me. I was on a lease with a guy named Bob Murray. He had shot his pointer named Lady, and she was in bad shape for a couple of weeks. He slept on the couch beside her for a week. I asked why he didn't take Lady to the vet. He replied that he was afraid the vet would turn him in.

Hard to believe shooting a dog was ever considered a proper form of discipline or no, but I'm glad times have changed.

Why let them chase rabbits? Why let them chase birds?

For the same reason I suppose. Mine has chased jack rabbits and now doesn't even mess with them or rabbits. Took him hunting quail yesterday at the chaparral and a huge jack rabbit flushed from the brush. He looked at it and them went on his way to find quail. And he is not an upland specialist.

I agree but he was old school. I've peppered one dog with maze in the shotshell instead of lead and it stung him. He would bust the birds before you got there. He stood his birds after that. An old veterinarian friend taught me about that. Said it was kinder. wink Electric collar works better.
