I had a chance to head down to Mexico for my first experience at some super-wide whitetails. My buddy who owns the ranch manages VERY sternly so it turns out the majority of the wide bucks I saw were not on the hit list because they were too young. They only look to kill bucks 7 years and older unless they're not going to be beasts.
We corned LOTS of miles of roads and would drive and check on them. This method of hunting was new to me as I'd always sat in a stand a waited/watched. I actually took my buck from one of the 6 roads we corned that terminated at a "wagon wheel". We'd corn them and sit in the wagon wheel perched in the back of the truck so we could see all lanes from one vantage point. If we saw a buck that needed a closer look, we'd head out on foot to get the proper view.

I literally saw 200-300 javelinas every day. I liken their density in this area of Mexico as rats are to New York. Since I'd never killed anything with my bow, I decided I could get lots of practice in on these critters. I was happy to record my first bow kill (and about 8 more).

After looking at some VERY wide (25"-28") bucks which proved to be too young, we saw this old boy come out on one of the roads. The does he wanted were on the other side of the wire and he didn't seem as inclined to hop it as he might have in his earlier years. We took out after him down a parallel road until we got within 200 yards of him. The set up was perfect. I was downwind and he was walking towards me on the road. I rolled out into the road using a local's 7mm with a bipod and took the shot. Although I hit him a little far back, he ran 20 yards and bedded back down. We watched him for 20 minutes before staking to within 20 yards of him and finishing the job. He was truly a brute and a trophy in my eyes. He scored 157 but, to me, he's something that the memories and experience will always make him a trophy in my eyes.

Holy Smokes!
What a great buck.
Congrats

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I don't care how many huge deer that ranch has on it, a buck that scores 157" is a trophy anywhere. Congrats and it sounds like it was a great trip up
