My son is hoping to get enough Christmas money to buy his first 12-gauge shotgun. He is 13 yrs old, but pretty big for his age. He has been shooting a 20-gauge but wants to move up to the 12-gauge now.
We are looking at getting him a Benelli Nova Pump. My question is...should he get the 26" or 28" barrel? What are the pros and cons of each? He will primarily be hunting Turkey and Dove...and occasionally ducks and pheasants.
Thanks!

The longer barrel will help him reach out there a little bit more, sometimes you need that little bit of umph in length.

Thanks! I can't stand a 28" barrel unless I'm shooting trap. Barrel length doesn't give you range. It's a compromise between balance, weight, and target acquisition speed. I like 24" and 26". It's personal preference more barrel more weight.

Length of barrel has zero to do with reaching out there...that's choke and shot size.
On 3" chambered guns I get 28" and on 3.5" guns (which I currently don't own any) I get 26". Just seems to be the balance I prefer. But it's 100% personal preference.

Anyone duck hunting with a youth hunter will be thankful if you get him a 28". A short hunter with a short barrel always gets those ears ringing. I'm partially kidding. I do prefer the swing of a 28" though. Sometimes it's easier for a young shooter to learn to swing though his lead with a longer barrel too. just my opinion, and it really is just personal preference.

Dove and quail, I prefer 26". Waterfowl, turkey and pheasant, I prefer 28" If I was going for an all-round gun, I'd probably go with the 28". But you can use extender tubes if you go with the shorter barrel. It probably won't make much difference in the long run so maybe let him handle them both and see what looks/feels most comfortable.

Longer barrels make for a smoother swing for some people. I shoot 26" barrels but seem to be in the minority.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

I prefer the longer barrel because it helps me to keep my barrel swing how bad and a longer sight plain makes it a little easier to line up the shot. A 28" barrel will also shoot 2" further!
