I have an old family Remington 742 30.06. This rifle jams. The bolt appears to twist as it slides forward and grips the top of the chamber where it would normally be grabbing a round. I know this is not a high end rifle, but is it worth taking to a gunsmith?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I would if I wanted to shoot the gun regularly. Go see Doc's in Carrollton & ask his opinion. Tell grumpy Ron - that moved to Texoma - said hello cheers

Many many years ago I had a friend loan me his grand-dads .30-06 that was a 742. It had a cracked stock and some patina from aging..some oddball Tasco mounted on it etc...but it functioned flawless.
The next year,he thought of selling it.. I told him he should hang on to it and get the stocked replaced. He himself had just become a Grandfather.I told him it would bea cool heirloom. Well sirs...he took the rifle and got a Bell & Carlson Stock for it,had the gun refinished in a matte type finish and put a Burris optics on it. After a while he gave it to his grandson a few years ago for his 12th birthday. Now mind you...he put more into the rifle than it was worth in $$$ but the sentiment behind it was/is priceless...
PS: His grandson has taken deer with the same rifle that his great-great grand-dad has, to me that's just awesome!!

Get it fixed! wink

Is it picking up a round but not completly locking up in chamber with it? If so I bet it's the extractor. Not uncommon at all with the 742 and 7400.

The extractors break very easily on the 742. They are also prone to feeding problems if any rust develops in the chamber. Those are the first two things to check.

I have one and my dad does too. About every 2-3 years of use, They have to go into the gunsmith to be cleaned good or they don't function properly. When they start messing up, I haven't been able to clean one myself and get it working good so I just take it in.

WileyYote, that's actually not too far from my house in Lewisville. I'll give him a shot(no pun) and see what he has to say. Thanks for all the suggestions!
