So my little man has hunted really hard this year. Not much luck at all for him up until this point. We hunted out lease in west Texas horrible storms made the deer movement slow. Hunted east Texas kinda the same deal. Well Thursday was his day!!!

We got in the stand late, had a tiny Doe come out pretty quick and leave. Feeder threw and we sat and waited. As my son sat looking threw the binos I noticed a little movement to my left. Out of the sides a deer could come from this was the worst side. Tree limbs! I whispered to Trent , hey buddy I see a deer. I noticed it was a buck. 8 point. About 10 inches wide. He was pumped till I told him we could only watch it cause it wasn't legal in our county. Well buddy I'll tell ya. Time went into fast forward and a stand still at the same time! So Trent keeps watching the lil 8 point when I see movement again. Holy moly, it's a spike!!! I say hey bud look left of that other deer. He spots the spike. He says can I shoot that one dad?! I say that's the one we have been waiting for!!!

Now the hunt just got serious!!! As the deer feeds down an old fence row he hangs up under an oak tree munching on what has to be last of the good acorns. We get all set up which wasn't an easy task. The deer isn't at the feeder it to my left. Of course my side of the stand. I position Trent on my knee with his 243. He looks at me and says ," dad I'm shaking to bad. I can't stop!" I tell him that's ok buddy. That's what it's all about. I won't forget that because I'm pretty sure I was shaking worse than him. Well ladies and gents the time presents its self. Trent is watching the spike through the scope. He tells me where he has the cross hairs. Right behind the shoulder! I tell him to take the gun off safety. He does but I told him don't touch the trigger till your ready to shoot. I was honestly afraid I was gonna mess up his shot but I was able to pul it together enough to quit shaking!!! Lol. BOOM!!!! The rifle goes off and the deer is hit hard. Only went 20 yards and dropped!!! We watch just to make sure but he was done. We high five and hug and talk about everything that just happened in minutes that seemed like an eternity.

We get down and we go to where he shot the deer and look for blood. Yes we could see the deer but I thought it best for him to find blood and track it the best he could. Not to hard to find!!! He made a great shot right behind the shoulder. Couldn't be more proud of my little man. Sorry for the long post. That was the short hand version. Lol.

Thanks bud! Forgot to add in my shirt story, his shot was right at 100 yds. Best hunt by far I've ever had the opportunity to be on!!!

X's 2 Probably the same for your son, as it was when i took my nephew for his 1st buck. The whole camp at the lease at the time 15 great hunters, most fathers themselves, gave up an afternoon hunt to help my nephew get a buck, we actually had to push the spike into a thicket, surround it with one shooting lane and the nephew got it done.

Looking at your sons smile and remembering how excited my 17 yo nephew was, you'd have thought they just got the new world record, if not the best memories I have of years of hunting.

Congrats to you both, hard to beat time spent together right there up

He has shot some Rams and a doe before. this one was different though. He had to hunt hard this year. I'm glad for that part. He felt like he earned it and he did. Thanks for all the replys guys. I just showed him the post and he is grinning from ear to ear. I bet we have talked about and retold the story a hundred times. With work in the past I missed a lot of good memories being gone. I don't have to travel anymore. This memory will be with me and him forever.

Thanks again for all the awesome comments everyone!!!

Congrats to both you and your son!

Good stuff!!!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
