15'-16' 42" boat with a 18hp copperhead surface drive. 2 guys most of time but sometimes 3. Transport boat only, not hunting out of it. This will be my first rig for duck hunting so I'm looking for a project boat that needs some love and care. Run it a few years and if I like what it does and need something bigger cross that bridge at that time. I've read several places copper heads are very powerful for there size. Or would yall suggest the 23hp?

actually the 18hp copperhead is the one for sale right now on mmt. A dude from KC has first dibs though. He has thru tomorrow to buy it or they call me. Don't mean the dude no harm but I'd like it if his money was no good tomorrow lol!

Not a bad starting point but a smaller boat to be crossing any open water. Just be careful and keep you head on your shoulders about the boats capabilities and it will be a great little starter rig.

My opinion is it too small. Too small a boat and way underpowered. The only reason to buy a mud boat is to push a payload across muddy flats. That boat won't perform like you're thinking.

If you're dropping cash, keep saving until you have enough. Get educated on what will and won't work. IMHO you should be buying 35 horse power. If the boat won't handle that, get a bigger boat.

If you plan on hunting 3 then I would go with the 23hp. We have a 25 hp gator tail on a 16x48 and it is perfect for 3 guys and a hunting load.

2 people light load boat will work , 3 people and gear you need a 35 hp . Best advice out there is buy as big as you can $$ on a mudmotor. You will hear this a lot on the mud motor sites . And if your looking to ever upgrade motor size boat size matters too. I have a 23 on a 1644 , works great but would like to go bigger.
