We got to Kansas yesterday morning. I had been eyeballing several walk in spots only to find that the county roads were way to bad to get to most of them. I almost got stuck several times. The snow seems to have taken cover away from a lot of places. So, with snow on the ground, what features on properties do I need to look for to find birds. I'm having a really hard time finding any kind of cover at all on any of the 100 properties I've been to so far.

Cattail thickets around ponds, or anyplace a hedgerow makes a depression, like where seasonal water can runoff. If it's cold/windy the birds will try and get out of it so the downwind side of hills can be good. If cover is sparse but food is present they will hold under small pine trees especially early am. They usually won't associate with big stands of trees, but if surrounded by thorn thickets, they will be in there. Just rambling off the top of my head, but you will generally find them in the thickest section of cover in an area when it's cold.

Smartweed/cat tails
Small pine trees
Thorn thickets
Any ditch created by water runoff
