Finally have the desire to deal with a puppy but not sure what I want.

Size I'm not to worried about
Prefer short hair
Less shedding the better
Will get trained to bird hunt
Gotta be good with kids and a good family pet
Not spending a small fortune

Got a few ideas but maybe a few other suggestions I may have forgotten

Bird hunting in Texas means quail hunting to me.

Me too but I've been on this forum long enough to know it doesn't to many.

So, what's your suggestion for him then?

If your hunting migratory birds and upland through out the year get you a English Springer Spaniel. If upland only, look at German Short Hairs, English Pointer, or German wire hair. They are all fun to hunt behind.

Would like to be somewhat versatile. Dove, quail and duck. Mostly will be dove though since I rarely get to see any quail and rarely have anyone to duck hunt with.

A lab is going to be your best retrieving dog and IMO your best family/house pet.

They shed though.

GSP is short hair and shedding is less noticeable. In my experience they are a little more high strung and do not have as much natural retrieving ability.

I would suggest a GSP for you if short hair is a must and a lot of shedding is a deal breaker.

If not then I think a lab would be your best choice.

I haven't really found a hunting dog that doesn't shed. Just seems more noticeable the longer the hair is. My vizsla sheds and everything I read up to buying him was that they don't. Lol

I think in a few years after I get my new pup going good and my current 10 year old passes on I'll look into a French Britt or Boykin for my Dove/Upland dog and have the Lab for waterfowl.

Definitely a lab. They are the most flexible and versatile. Just take the dog to the groomer for a bath and a fluff every 6 weeks and your shedding problem will not be a problem. Pointers usually don't retrieve and they don't do water. Springer's are great little flushers for upland but they don't do water well and can't mark beyond gun range. Boykins are more watery then springers but they are very hard to train, ( I've trained several.)

FWIW

Your going to have to spend a small fortune if the dog is going to make a bird dog

Get a cocker or Brittany. Labs are great dogs but too damn big. I have a 110 pounder that's been retrieving for me the last 10 years. They shed worse than any other breed.

When I was living in east TX I duck hunted quite a bit and got a lab pup. I love the old bastard but the first time I drug him in the boat I wished I still had my 30 pound Brittany. He's old and probably needs to be put down at 10 but every time I think he's ready for the last ride to the farm he rallies. He can't load up anymore and I have to lift him in the truck because he still loves to go. I have a buddy that's always had a lab and after seeing my Brittany pup work this year he said he's going French Brittany from now on.

I have a buddy that has English cockers and they are great retrievers. I like the look of them as well.

When you decide what breed you want consider saving up for a well bred animal if you have a wife and kids. When I was younger and running a lot of dogs I would try any dog, keep the best and kill or give away the rest. The only way to have a great string of dogs or one awesome animal is to give away or kill the inferior ones. Once you have a family that is no longer an option. Give yourself the best chance at a great pet by purchasing your dog from good stock. It'll pay off in the end when your not pouring feed down an animal for 12 + years that won't even bring back a dove for you.

Vizsla, no shedding, loyal to a fault and great with kids

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

I'll put my money into training but some of these people wanting 2-3k for a dog is nuts to me. Got some connections on certain breeds and some are just easy to come by. Main thing I'm worried about is tempurment. Got 20 month old twins so can't be having any aggressive dogs. I like labs but everyone I've been around sheds a lot. I like German short hairs too but most I've been around are ridiculously hyper. I know it's gonna take time and money to get a good hunting dog.

Let me know when you find the breed that has short hair, doesn't shed, can handle the conditions for waterfowl, is calm in the house, has the retrieving desire of a lab and the stamina of a pointer.

I'll gladly pay 3k

All dogs shed. There is no such thing as a dog that does not shed to some extent. Even humans shed.

Yeah but 3 vizslas shed less than 1 lab.
If you don't like GSPs, your probably not going to like a vizsla. Mine will still racetrack through the house if I don't get them out to exercise often enough, and they are 5 and 6 years old. But with exercise they're couch potatoes.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

True, all of it.

If you said minus the shedding, easy, GSP. Not all have those characteristics but they are not hard to find if you do a little work.
