Shot a large boar hog with my .270 this weekend, one of many I've killed through the years. Hit him with a high neck shot at the base of the skull with my .270 at about 70 yards. He dropped immediately and started kicking so I just waited for him to stop moving. About 30 seconds he did, so I got up from my chair and stated out the back of my blind to go retrieve him. Then I noticed him stumbling to his feet and stumble back off into the brush. Looked for him for about 30 minutes where I felt somewhat safe doing so but gave up, not wanting to have a bad encounter with a wounded boar.
Told the wife later who is a big Walking Dead fan that he must have become a "walker".
"Some people will never like you because your spirit irritates their demons."

I had a very similar experience on a big boat shot with a 308. The pig dropped in his tracks and while I was packing my stuff to leave I see him roll over and walk away. The pig laid motionless on the ground for a good three minutes.

I did exactly the same thing early this week. Three medium sized hogs at the feeder. I shot and dropped the spotted one. Rather than put another round in the flopping pig, I held off in the hope that the other two might come back. When I was reaching down and get my thermos of coffee, the hog apparently got up and took off. Dang!
Had that happen many years ago with a big 10 point, and I told myself I'd never let that happen again. But I did.
Not my monkeys, not my circus...

From now on every boar will get a "double tap".

I always put a 2nd shot to the head regardless, you probably hit the hard neck muscle and didn't cause enough damage to break the spine

A couple of walkers I have seen. This first one was from a sounder and the shot was my buddy's opening shot. The hog went down and bounced up and my buddy picked it up as it went by. This next hog, somebody put a shot clean through behind the ears, tearing up the right ear in the process. It was mostly healed by the time I put it down. If the shot doesn't actually do sufficient CNS damage... I don't put 2nd shots into hogs as a matter of practice, but did for a while. Now I only do it if I think they are getting back up.

Had this happen too. I keep an eye on them now. If there's too much activity, I'll shoot 'em again for insurance and to stop them from suffering.

With a head or neck shot (CNS)....IF they aren't 'kicking'....shoot again.
Anytime you shoot a hog and it goes down like you just 'turned off a light' shoot it again for insurance.
Spartans ask not...how many, but where!

If you can(t) shoot the head at 70 you can shoot the vitals.
