On my hunting lease, deer, hog, turkey, dove, duck in order of importance now, we had a nice lake that went dry after 50 years in the drought. We are in Montague county. I would catch bass up to 7 lbs out of nice clear water. I had some great duck shoots before two years ago. Last good hunt I was done in 5 minutes. Had enough ducks for 10 guys to limit in no time with plenty birds to spare. When it would freeze over we had roosting ducks to keep it open. It went dry finally and landowner dug and cleaned it out deep down to bedrock. Dam broke twice this year with the floods. It is plum full now again with more steady rains. Where I had good dove hunts is underwater now. Water is red and no visibility. It's about 2 surface acres and 20 feet deep in the middle.

Question is how long should we expect it to stay stained? I know when it clears we can expect greatness again but how long does this normally take? Obviously the dam needs to stop breaking which it looks like it will hold now. We have a few other ponds that do go dry about once every 10 years and they stay stained all the time but this is spring fed. The frogs have made this a nice home for sure.

Start feeding it lime. That will help clear it up.

Throw some broke up bales of hay straw in it. It will clear up pretty quick.

Several common methods...

Hay application of 500-550 pounds per acre-foot of water around the shallow areas/edges

Gypsum application of 250-500 pounds per surface acre of water, preferably spread by dissolving in water and then spraying. Wait a couple weeks and add more as needed. Limestone can also be used.

Alum or aluminum sulfate is supposed to be the fastest method I believe.

Lots of pond mgmt info out there for correcting suspended clay particles.

That said you may even have to repeat for several years until clear. Also, do not perform the hay treatment in the summer unless you are not concerned about possibly causing a fish kill due to oxygen depletion.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting.......holy kaka.....What a Ride!
