Lol you are correct. Early 1900s
Reminds me of another post where a guy said he saw a tornado and did a 360 to get away from it. If you do 6 360's in a row you only have a 50% probability of actually completing the 6th 360 and running into the twister.... Gavin just tried todo 6 360's

TPWD did a small stocking of Bear in East Texas as an experiment in the '80s. They have stocked bears in Fannin, Lamar, and Red River counties in the last few years. Around 300 were released in secret, as to not have them poached. Both of these statements are completely false. Yep, I lol'd when I saw those two post. Buddy of mine sent me some pics of one hanging out on the side of the road between del rio and Sonora. I'll see if a can dig it up and post it I hope they make a comeback

I saw one hit on the turnpike a few years back. Not far from Hugo. Pretty sure they cross the river. Cousin in telephone has seen tracks on his land.

They thrived in central Texas back in the days of the original settlers. I have read neat stories of them on the Guadalupe River and how they would destroy a pecan tree by ripping its limbs off so that the pecans could be easily removed on the ground. That story was from the Gonzales/Seguin area. Bears, buffaloes, and jaguars, were hunted till there was nothing left.

The guy that owned the place next to me said they had a bear around there but I thought he was full of doo doo. Maybe he was right.

I didn't even know you could do that... thanks haha Don't feel bad. This one guy on here called Cast does IT for a living. He stopped by last night. He couldn't get his pictures to work. I told him to just quote one of the pictures I had posted, copy one on the links, and past it onto his reply. Guess what? He couldn't find the quote box. Guess what again? He was not logged on. That's a double Oxnering! I'm not sure which is worse, you doing it, or Oxner telling everybody about it.

It has been a few years but remember black bear sightings as far north as Junction and Mason Texas. Wondering if anyone has seen them that far north lately? Gus

They are starting to show up in the panhandle. Coming in through the Canadian river drainage out of New Mexico. I thought this bear trap was a joke when I was hunting BLM land north of Amarillo. Biologist assured me it was there for a purpose.

There is a historical marker at the Murphy cemetery that explains that Capt. Murphy fed his family on bears and rabbits.

Thanks for the info JohnRussell! That seems to be the eastern end of the "frequented" range.

The game warden found one dead in a gravel pit next to our old place in rock springs after a big flood. Apparently it had drowned. This was about 7 years ago.

It will be interesting when somebody posts one they killed in Texas thinking it's the same as other predators according to the game laws.
To be determined

I got a call from my neighbor yesterday, he was repairing my gate after one of his workmen hit it with some heavy equipment. Turns out, he had a bear on his ranch (across the fence from mine). The bear hung around for almost 3 months and he had pictures of it sitting in his water troughs. He called the Game Warden who trapped it and took it back to the Devils River Ranch (About 3 miles west of my ranch). TP&W released 3 bears on that ranch and this one trsveled East a few miles. It had 2 yellow ear tags..sorry I do not have pictures. That explains some unusual looking scat I found that I could not identify with any animal I have seen or captured on film.
