This is my first winter with my new boat, I have a 40 hp Yamaha outboard (side steer) that I will be keeping outside all winter most likely. I'd like to hear how y'all go about "winterizing" if you do or how you operate if you do not. I plan on using the boat throughout the winter until duck season ends. Thanks, for your help.

I keep it covered and try to run it at least once a week for 10-15 minutes. on a hard freeze i might put a light under the cover to keep the motor temp above freezing.

I keep my boat in a tin barn. The only winterizing it gets is that I run the motor dry at each outing and let the motor down, so all the water can drain, when I park it.

Just make sure and tilt the motor all the way down and let all the water drain out so if it freezes it won't damage your motor. Fuel treatment for water and ethanol. Make sure the drain plug is out of the boat and you should be good.

This....also pull the kill switch and crank it over a few times with the motor down to allow the water pump to push water out of it. Do not run it out of the water...you'll fry that water pump pretty quickly. Now is also a good time to change your lower unit grease just to make sure there isn't any water in it that could freeze.

If you have electric start a trickle charger is a "got to have" item too.
