What is your opinion / experience with Pointer / Setter crosses. (Quail hunting)

About all I know is that they are called a drop. I've read that some have made decent bird dogs, but I've never seen one in action. I wouldn't take a free one as a pup.

One of the best dogs I ever hunted behind was a setter/pointer cross. He was an unbelievable bird Finder.
He was bred back to a pointer and the one pup that I got to hunt behind was a great dog as well. I wouldn't hesitate to take a chance on cross pup if Both parents were good hunters.

I have been hunting 50 years and I have seen 3 in the field. Every one of them was a machine. Back 40 + years ago, the American Field would let you register that cross of drop as a setter. AF was trying to put a little juice in the setter bloodline at the time. The absolute finest bird dog that I have ever hunted behind was a cross between a red setter and a standard poodle out of Delaware that smoked my blueblood, high-powered, field trailing, registered string up in Kansas on a weekend pheasant hunt. We just backed and honored all weekend.

Back in the early 80's I hunted behind one that was quite a bird dog and I also had one that would not hunt. I figure it's like any litter of purebreds you hope for that one great one and then hope the rest make bird finders.
