I have a hog problem and now a trapping problem. I set my hog trap (its a big one maybe 5'x10') near that water tank, put corn in and next morning I caught an big 10 point buck that ended up breaking a tine off from getting caught in trap.

Question: how do I keep the deer out and hogs in?

Also, I'd like to trap the hogs, but its deer season and I don't want to spoke the big boys when the hogs are in the trap making noise (the current trap at the tank is close to my 2 hunting stands).

I know common sense is put the trap far away from your blinds, but any other science or advice around hog trap placement when deer hunting?

Thanks ahead of time!

Put a wire across the trap opening about 24" high, maybe slightly higher. The hogs will slide under it, the deer typically won't see it but will bump it with their antlers and back away.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

And if your worried about the pigs in a trap scaring the deer, then don't use the trap for the next three weekends.

Thanks for the advice, I will try both the wire and brush up, as the top of the trap is not removable.

I watched a buck for over an hour eat corn from a hog trap. Thought for sure he would hang his horns on the trip wire. He went in and out several times. When it was too dark to shoot, I went by the trap and he had eaten almost all of the corn behind the trip wire. The guy that runs the traps mentioned he had caught a similar buck several days before. I guess he learned not to hit the trip wire. confused2

I have had deer push through brush to get to corn. And I even caught the same broken horn buck a few times. (We must have stupid deer, or hungry ones).
After I watched our deer eat up all the diesel corn I finally had to make an open top trap, and it works good. I have caught a few fawns that could not jump the 4' tall sides, but thanks to the way the trap was made they are easy to release.

Soak the corn in water to make it sour.
This usually needs to be done weeks ahead of time depending on the temperature.
May take a really long time in cold water.

If you can't wait that long, then mix corn w/ water and manure to stink it up.
Done this numerous times with success keeping the deer out. Hogs did not seem to mind.

But agreed that open top traps are the way to go if possible.
Box traps can kill deer (after they break their jaw) and even slightly pressured hogs will get trap shy of boxes. Guillotine style trap doors also become useless. Seen sows on the outside lift up the door to let the others out.

I brush the fronts of my traps. we hunt down south. I had a large pen trap with an open top that would allow deer to jump out and keep hogs in. I like this style of trap, but its A LOT OF WORK to set it up and move it around. so I've let that go and just use regular 4x8 standard cage traps. I pick these up and move them easily with the tractor.

I put branches across the front to discourage the deer. I've not caught any deer since I started doing this. the hogs don't seem to care.

or...if you build your own traps. don't make the door height so tall. pigs will really shimmy into a pretty low door. deer will leave it alone.
