Shot at my first buck tonight. I drew at 30 yards and hit him just a tad forward. Saw the arrow sticking out of him as he ran off. Letting him sit overnight. Any suggestions or tips from any seasoned hunters? Hopefully I'll have pics tmrw and can give the full story

Remember where he was when you shot, where he went, and where you last saw him. If needed, get back up in the stand to confirm where these exact spots were for searching. Look for tiny spots of blood and go slow. Have a friend to help if possible. Not much else to do til morning! Good luck!

I agree with everything said above, I would also take some toilet paper and mark your blood trail. If you lose it you'll know where the last blood was and it will also give you a direction of travel if the blood completely stops. I've had them take a 90 deg turn and I've also had them double back for some time. You did the right thing by waiting until morning, wish I was there to help you find him, good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Did you check for any sign last night? That would have told me what to do last night or even this morning? How thick was the cover he entered from and left into? Did he leave the same direction he came in from?

Did he leave the same direction he came in from? Always check the direction they came from. If they can they will usually circle or get back to that trail/path or direction unless they expire before getting there.

Look in and near water.
I once found a buck 50 feet from shore on the shallow end of a tank 3 days after I shot him. One antler was sticking out and that was it.
Would also suggest tying off rope to you truck before going in such water. If I hadn't done so getting out might not have happened. Lots of muck!

Probably too late now but always take something to mark trail. Toilet paper is a good choice. That way you can look back and get a general direction where the deer is going in order to find next blood. Good luck.

There is plenty of reason to wait until morning if your talking about a bow shot that was forward.

There is plenty of reason to wait until morning if your talking about a bow shot that was forward. Maybe. In my opinion there is also plenty of reason to go back to camp get a cup of coffee some warm food in your belly get a flash light and come back in an hour. No reason to let it sit 12 hours when 1 would do the trick.

In my opinion there is also plenty of reason to go back to camp get a cup of coffee some warm food in your belly get a flash light and come back in an hour. No reason to let it sit 12 hours when 1 would do the trick. There are certain shots that I always wait until morning. I actually prefer to track at night, can locate blood better. If the shot was forward, it is iffy on the recovery depending on the elevation. If he could see the arrow sticking out, it more than likely buried in one of the shoulders. Front shot or high shot take longer for the blood to start dripping and actually reaching the ground. It can make tracking difficult. I have seen some make it 40-50 yards before finding any sign. I shot a doe this weekend in the shoulder and she made it about 30 yards before flipping head over heels and piling up. My father shot a spike in the shoulder and we tracked it 400 yards and ended up bumping him the next morning. If he had giving him until the morning, might have stowed up enough and stayed put. As a hunter, you have to make the decision that you think is best for the animal and possible recovery. I dread bumping an animal after it has laid up. Typically the blood trail is virtually non-existing after being bumped and if you let them lay long enough, many times they are to weak to make it back up and if they do, they cant make it as far. Good luck

Depending on where you are at, the coyotes will find him before you will if you let him sit overnight. For this reason alone, I never let a deer go all night anymore. A couple of hours will do if you hit vitals and if you didn't, waiting till the morning probably won't matter much. Not much science to tracking though, just find where you shot him an follow the blood trail.
How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

What if the deer needs more than an hour? And there is no way of knowing if the deer needs more time or not, so the only thing to do is wait until morning.

Ill take that chance any day unless I know the deer isn't dead. In my opinion waiting till morning is waiting to collect horns, im not that interested in that.

I have recovered many deer the next morning and they ate just fine. Also, we have very coyotes, so I don't have to worry about that. Had a hunter lose one to yotes this year in Kansas. Temperatures will make me push a marginally hit animal before anything else. Just seen too many hunters look to soon and lose a deer that very easily could have been recovered with a little extra time.

So your fine with pushing a deer thats not ready and possible not ever finding it? If its not mortaly wounded your still gonna push it in the morning. If it is hit give it an hour or two maybe 3, but no im not going to let it sit till morning until I have let it sit for a few hours and looked and cant find it. Im not suggesting you jump out of the stand and chase it, but you can certainly go looking before daylight. I don't mind tracking at night. If I ran out of blood at night I would stop till morning, but if you never go look at the trail you will never know till morning. It irks me to see shows etc. and hear stories about people who let them sit over night only to find the deer within sight of the point of impact the next morning. It wouldn't have hurt to wait 2 hours and go back with a flashlight and check for blood.

I'm just waiting to see how this hunter makes out. Hopefully he will find his deer.
I can think of good reasons to argue for waiting till the morning or going out at night after several hours. I notice that the OP never did say whether or not he went to where the deer was shot and checked for blood. That's probably the first think I would have done and then decided on whether to wait a few hours and go out with a light or wait until the next day.
I think the hunter felt he had a shoulder shot and that the deer needed a lot of time to bed down and die. The risk of coyotes finding the deer before morning is always present...and you might end up only with antlers. But at least you have that. Jump that deer by going out too soon and you may find nothing and have that "sick" feeling for the rest of the season.
Let's hope this story has a happy ending.

I have no problem tracking at night if i know the shot was good but if not that deer will lay till in the morning.

I hope he finds his buck, but I agree with most of you fellas. IMO, it would depend on the situation at hand (being there) and past experience. If the op really doesn't know, then a precursory look at the hit sight for sign, then a wait time decision based on that. Personally I don't want to leave one sitting more than necessary, but pushed a nice one 36 years ago and regret it to this day.
