Hello everyone, I frequently get on this site even though I don't post. I recently was given the opportunity to teach the Archery merit badge for our Boy Scout troop out of Ovilla tx. Upon inspection of the troops equipment I realized that this was going to be difficult. We have 2 recurve bows with a 45lb draw weight which are too heavy for the majority of the boys to pull. We also have 2 universal draw fiberglass bows that don't sling an arrow hard enough to stick in the target from 30 feet away. I need a couple of old recurve bows in the 20 to 30lb range. This is to be funded by myself so the cheaper the better. Any and all help would be appreciated. Hopefully we can get some of these boys interested in hunting. Thank You for your time. Terry Troop 524 Ovilla Texas

As a former ASM and current SM I can tell you that having the equipment is just part of the story. Proper care and suitable storage becomes an issue as well. You may find it helpful to partner with a local archery shop or sporting goods outlet to get some price cuts and possibly even provide some range time. If your boys are willing a car wash or candy sale to pull in funds to buy some equipment it great as well. I bought an inexpensive fleching tool on clearance and another leader built a string jig. However some of those more detailed parts of the merit badge are better left for summer camp. We like to use our certified folks for weekend shoots at camp. Good luck in your search and kudos to you for supporting the last organization in this country that teaches boys to be men and good citizens.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.
