Buddy has 850 acres in Menard and is very gracious about letting friends hunt. I took my whole family there this weekend, with the focus on having my five-year-old son sit with me to experience the hunt process.

We had a great weekend and I think that he had the full picture by the time it was done.

Some pictures:

Peter and his buddy having some beers. Of the root variety.

Filling feeders

Ready to sling and arrow

Hanging out in the dry water tank

Saturday evening we headed to the blind having seen a huge amount of deer, but nothing I would consider shooters. Between six of us our informal poll was something to the tune of 32 bucks and nine does. The owner of the ranch wants the number spend quite a bit, so I took Peter Saturday night with the intention of shooting a buck. About 20 minutes until dark we had four young bucks, all eight points, and one doe that must have been hot, because the bucks were pushing her all over the place. All of the bucks were young, so I actually picked up the smallest from the group to shoot, as they needed the numbers trimmed and this was the least promising. I pulled the trigger, but made Peter follow around the target buck and tell me which one he was after about 10 minutes. Here's the sequence...

Anyway, even though it wasn't the biggest buck in the world, we had a great weekend overall and my son has already asked me three times when he can go hunting again. I consider that a huge success.

Great job

Thank You

Thanks all. It was truly a great weekend.

Gonna do a euro and put a picture on the mount plaque.

Apart from being scared that, "he's gonna be mad because you shot him" when we were walking up, my son handled everything like a pro. Was quiet in the blind, no sudden movements, actually saw some of the deer coming in before I did. And he said, "Mmmmmmm..." over and over while I was rendering the buck.
