Hogs Olfactory.

Small family get together today at my In-Laws. After lunch...the ladies were in the kitchen putting things up, my Mother In Law looking out the kitchen window...suddenly shouts OMG...look at the yard.

We walked out the front door and saw where overnight, a group of hogs had rooted up their front yard.

My In-Laws live just across the FM road from us and I regularly cut their lawn for them. Just yesterday...I was over there with the Zero Turn and made a quick pass over the yard to mulch up the leaves and level the grass.

Under the pecan trees there were still a lot whole pecans that got chopped up.

In 30 years they have NEVER had hogs in their front yard. In the pastures, yes...but never near the house.

Is it reasonable to think they smelled the pecans and came for those. 90% of the damage was right under the 5 trees in the yard.

We are talking 25 yds. off the Farm to Market Road....which has traffic day and night. Pretty bold hogs!

No doubt. But can you smell a ribeye at 500 yards? That is the closest cover the hogs could have come from.

If the wind is right and freshly chopped nuts. Yup, I think they can smell that. Could be they were just passing by and caught a whiff, decided to drop in.

Mmmm, move over pigs !!

But seriously, folks — I'll bet they caught a whiff of freshly chopped pecans. I know I've never had much luck trying to sneak around hogs to get to a better shooting position if it involved moving upwind of them, even if only a very slight breeze. And, regardless of what my so-called friends say, I don't smell THAT bad!

I have two unwritten rules:
